I don't think it's rude unless you go up to someone and speak broken english while just assuming that they don't speak english. Then you're just kind of racist. But you didn't do that, so I think you're fine. And I agree with others in the thread that broken english is probably easier for people who have a poor grasp of the language to understand. When I first came to America, that was the way I was most easily able to understand the language for a while. And then it wasn't long before I was able to speak and understand more complex sentences
