I think their point was more that 'he had all the advantages to kick it with, and didn't bother to use them'. At least, that's how I read it and...I can kinda see their point? It's one thing if he'd been trying but from what I've heard he wasn't even bothering with it.

He had tried, repeatedly from what I understand. He'd also gotten addicted at a very young age and actually turned his life around in many positive ways, but this struggle apparently got the better of him again and again. This is not the "spoiled celebrity with an invincibility and entitlement complex" story.

He had tried rehab repeatedly, most recently within the last four months. I have no idea where you get this idea that "he wasn't even trying." Every single interview I've read with people who knew him said he had been trying very hard, and struggling to kick his addiction for years.

He had just gotten out of rehab.
