He got addicted to drugs when he was a kid and he didn't have it all. And I guess that if staying clean were easy, nobody would relapse. It's a fight. And sometimes, sadly, people lose.

Addiction's hard. He's been addicted to various drugs since he was 13 years old. That means he got into them before his brain was fully developed (by far) and he didn't grasp the extent of his actions. Addiction's not something that fully goes away, either; you know the whole "once an addict always an addict" and that once you're an alcoholic you'll always be one? Addiction is a constant thing. He tried to get better this year, but he slipped.

I'm not in the Glee fandom, but I do feel sorry for him. This is clearly something he struggled with for a long time.

Agreed. People know the ramifications of getting into illicit substances, and one of the very great risks is that you will die.

I feel bad for the family and the loved ones that he left behind.

I'm gonna buck the trend here. A life is wasted, but it's not more of a waste because he had money and fame. Addicts make bad choices and it's nobody's fault but their own, but it's not like money solves all problems. What do you really know about his friends/family?

I'm addicted to sugar, and let me tell you, cutting out sweets made me understand what an alcoholic or a drug addict goes through. If I feel like I'm crawling up a wall when I don't have any sweets, I can't imagine how I'd feel if I didn't have any drugs.

I have dealt with people who suffer from addiction first hand, and getting clean/sober is not an easy road.

To me, it seemed he really wanted to get better. He gave rehab a go and seemed to honestly want to get better. You have no idea how many addicts won't even think of going to rehab or even admit they have a problem.

He did have a great life (now), but he got addicted at thirteen. I can't even image the fight had with drugs and getting clean. He was honest with people about his struggle as well. That takes a lot of courage.

He just relapsed. I really don't think he wanted to throw everything in his life away (I have seen people who have). He just lost the struggle against a disease that he had suffered from since childhood.

He slipped up. It's sad.

I'm sorry that you lost loved ones to drugs, OP. They chose to start taking drugs but they didn't choose to die from them. Please do your best to free yourself from this anger.

People screw up. People fall into cycles, patterns. Non-famous people have things going for them too.

I'm willing to bet we've all done something at one time or another that could have ended very, very badly. We did it, it happened, we walked away. Not everyone is that lucky.

I don't even smoke cigarettes, let alone do drugs. I discourage people for doing either of those things. But sometimes they do, and sometimes it's too late. I'm not going to blame someone for having emphysema or lung cancer, nor am I going to blame them for ODing.

This seems an incredibly ignorant and non-compassionate secret to me. Addiction isn't easier to buck because you're famous and appear to have it all. I expect it might make it harder- just look at the number of celebrities who appeared to have it all and died young from drugs or booze or whatever. And btw, OP, none of us EVER know what someone else's life is really like. So you think he had everything and chose to throw it away? How do you know? Were you magically privy to all aspects of his personal life? Do you know for a fact that he had no private demons he had to grapple with?

It's almost as if life, happiness, suffering and success are subjective to each person or something.

All of my social media is flooded with people crying and mourning his death. Everyone feels so sorry for him. I don't. All I see is another person who had everything and wasted it. He had a very successful career, a Significant Other who seemed to love him, and lots of friends. He had a dream life compared to most people. But he CHOSE to toss it all away. He had the money to get help; the tools and the support to quit but he didn't. I have watched people I love do the same thing. You can only excuse an addicts behavior and choices so long.

Secret because: Glee fandom would kill anyone who said anything bad about him.

I've never watched Glee, so don't really know who this guy is, but I read about his death. I think that Hollywood is very imbued with drug use, let's face it, how many celebrities have died young from drug use? (Or the old chestnut, OD on prescription painkillers "accidentally" cos of course they had recently had pain/illness) I was talking to a guy who works in Hollywood, for celebs, he's not one himself, and he was saying that dying young from a drug related cause is pretty much how they go.

They also have all those doctors who'll supply them with prescription meds, like those that killed Michael Jackson. Earning big money just means more access to drugs.

I think the ones who don't die young are successful drug users, and there are a lot of those in the world, some people can handle it. If you watch Behind The Candleabra I think that deals with the drug culture side of it really well.

I have a drug addict cousin who murdered her baby with meth. Now we have yet another story of some 'celebrity' (I never heard of him before this)killing himself with an overdose of drugs. And I'm supposed to feel sorry for this self-inflicted wound? No. Hell no. If you make predictably poor choices, you can expect to deal with the consequences. It's called taking responsibility.
