while i agree with you, i don't know if its about hypocrisy, because it feels like about 90% of the reason people have this reaction is because they've been personally hurt by people they loved who were addicts, and their feelings are super-entrenched and everything just gets acrimonious and personal really quickly.

people who think this are not hypocrites. they're just reacting to the pain others have caused them. i think that's understandable and human.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
People also get hurt by people they love who are mentally ill.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that is true.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Mental illness is not something you choose to get into, whereas getting into drugs is a choice.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What about people who get into drugs because they have a mental illness?

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-07-21 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Addiction is a mental illness, just FYI.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But without starting to consume an addicting substance is impossible to get addicted.

You don't choose to be an addict, but you choose to start doing drugs. And it's pretty common knowledge that most drugs are addictive.

The difference is that taking drugs is a CHOICE you make, unlike having a mental illness or being Mexican. After you're already addicted, sure, then you have a super tough time getting off them, but in the beginning, when you just start experimenting? That's a CHOICE. People talk about addicts like someone tied them to a chair and shoved a crack pipe in their mouth and kept them there till they became addicted, but that isn't generally how it happens. It's like choosing to repeatedly have unsafe sex and then catching syphilis. Sure, syphilis sucks, and it's not something you can wish away, but you CHOSE to engage in the behavior that put you at risk to get it. Same with drugs. You CHOOSE to experiment with crack, you put yourself at risk to get addicted.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. some people make bad choices, unlike me, and therefore they deserve to die.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No one said anything like "you deserve to die." Only pointing out that if you make a stupid decision that is KNOWN to have terrible consequences, you do not get to act like a helpless victim when those consequences arrive.

As someone who lives with a recovering alcoholic, no. Many start because they are self medicating to cover up issues with mental illness. My husband is bipolar & it wasn't until he stopped drinking that we realized he had other problems.

Addiction isn't always a choice.

He was 13 when he made that choice. A lot of 13-year-olds make stupid choices, and we don't usually blame them for those for the rest of their lives.

Also, for a kid that young to be getting involved in hard drugs, there is probably something more to it than "oh what the hell, drugs look fun!" Lots of people try drugs. Most people who get addicted are self-medicating to deal with mental health or emotional issues in their lives. Judging them for it is neither compassionate nor helpful.
