(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)I'm just trying to be clear here on what you're saying. Because you think that addicts deserve to die, and you're also arguing that taking an addictive substance is morally the same as being addicted, because anyone who takes an addictive substance does so with the knowledge that they could become addicted.
So clearly, this would lead to the conclusion that anyone who's ever done hard drugs, or drank any alcohol, or smoked a cigarette, or had a cup of coffee deserves to die, because those are all addictive things, and they could have become addicts, and someone who makes a choice that could lead them to become an addict is morally the same as an addict, and addicts deserve death.
So just to be clear here, this is what you think, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)Not everyone in this thread are saying that addiction means that someone is a horrible person who deserves to die. They're saying that they are not blameless in their addiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)They do deserve help and support, but they shouldn't be told "Oh, it's ok. That's an illness so it's not your fault at all".
Unless they were forced to start, they are the only responsible for their own actions and although their situations should be taken into account, that doesn't make them completely responsibility free for their actions.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, I agree that they made mistakes, but they're still human beings, and it is still an illness. And human beings, even ones who make mistakes, deserve help, support, understanding, and sympathy. Not being told that it's wrong to feel sympathy for them if they die.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)Like that anon who says men deserve rape more than women? They're always coming in with "I didn't say they deserve it, just that they deserve but MORE than women." which is moronic logic.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 01:33 am (UTC)(link)This conversation has moved WAY beyond just discussing the OP's original point or Cory's death. We're now talking about addiction in general.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)yes, addiction to hard drugs is preventable.
But, there is such a thing and "addictive personalities". So let's say he never got his hands on hard drugs. He might have just had an innocent drink and became an addict - while me, who does not have that genetic make-up, can get plastered a a party (I generally choose not to, but I could) without getting addicted.
So basically, had he never taken drugs, he might still have ended up an alcoholic and died similarly anyway....

"Whoops, you tried coke once, you totally deserve whatever happens to you now. Lololololol."

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)And fuck off, I didn't say that addicts deserve whatever happens to them.
I just don't think that it's *honest* to act like addiction isn't preventable the same way schizophrenia isn't preventable.
Does that mean that addicts shouldn't be offered all the support in getting clean we can offer them? Or course not. The same way I feel that people who get hurt ridding motorcycles without helmets should receive medical care.
Doesn't mean that the initial decision wasn't their's or that it wasn't a poor decision.
