You don't choose to be bipolar or mexican...

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
neither do you choose to be an addict

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
But you choose to drink alcohol/take drugs/etc.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What about people who start taking drugs or drinking as a way of self-medicating for undiagnosed mental illness, and subsequently become addicted?

You don't choose to be an addict, but you choose to start doing drugs. And it's pretty common knowledge that most drugs are addictive.

(frozen comment) Trigger warning for eating disorders

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-07-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't choose to have an eating disorder, but I chose to start throwing up at the earliest opportunity after I ate when I was eleven years old. When a person's eleven, or thirteen, the part of the brain that regulates decision-making isn't fully developed yet. You literally don't understand consequences. It's not throwing up=less water weight=ulcers and tooth loss, it's throwing up=weight loss=people stop picking on you. And likewise, it's not drugs=temporary relief=addiction, it's drugs=no pain=happiness.

The difference is that taking drugs is a CHOICE you make, unlike having a mental illness or being Mexican. After you're already addicted, sure, then you have a super tough time getting off them, but in the beginning, when you just start experimenting? That's a CHOICE. People talk about addicts like someone tied them to a chair and shoved a crack pipe in their mouth and kept them there till they became addicted, but that isn't generally how it happens. It's like choosing to repeatedly have unsafe sex and then catching syphilis. Sure, syphilis sucks, and it's not something you can wish away, but you CHOSE to engage in the behavior that put you at risk to get it. Same with drugs. You CHOOSE to experiment with crack, you put yourself at risk to get addicted.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. some people make bad choices, unlike me, and therefore they deserve to die.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No one said anything like "you deserve to die." Only pointing out that if you make a stupid decision that is KNOWN to have terrible consequences, you do not get to act like a helpless victim when those consequences arrive.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It is difficult for me to see how "We should not have sympathy for the death of an addict, because death is the consequence of addiction and addiction is a choice that the addict made" is not functionally equivalent to "The addict deserved to die." The addict's death is the natural and expected byproduct of what he did, and we shouldn't have any kind of compassion or concern about it - that's pretty much what you're arguing here. If it's natural and not at all regrettable, how is that different from saying that he deserves to die?

Calling out logical fallacies in all caps is a far worse argument/debate tactic than any strawman.

CHOOSING TO EXPERIMENT WITH DRUGS IS NOT.

...sometimes, it is. Not always, but sometimes. Also, there's the part about still being a child. That makes a difference too.

Taking drugs is an action that is KNOWN to lead to addiction. Anyone who makes that CHOICE to take drugs does not get to act like a helpless victim when the KNOWN consequences arrive, as they WILL DO.

As someone who lives with a recovering alcoholic, no. Many start because they are self medicating to cover up issues with mental illness. My husband is bipolar & it wasn't until he stopped drinking that we realized he had other problems.

Addiction isn't always a choice.

It is.
There are other copping mechanisms that do not involve drinking or taking drugs and if they decided to start drinking/taking drugs instead of doing something else, their illness or bad situation is not at fault.

He was 13 when he made that choice. A lot of 13-year-olds make stupid choices, and we don't usually blame them for those for the rest of their lives.

Also, for a kid that young to be getting involved in hard drugs, there is probably something more to it than "oh what the hell, drugs look fun!" Lots of people try drugs. Most people who get addicted are self-medicating to deal with mental health or emotional issues in their lives. Judging them for it is neither compassionate nor helpful.
