A couple of things: He may have originally started with drugs when he was 13, but we aren't talking about the death of a 13 year old. He was 31. Given that he spent more than one stint in rehab, I think it is safe to say that his 31 year old self DID know the risks and the foolishness of continuing to take heroin, regardless of how ignorant or innocent his 13 year old self was. Being addicted is a disease; feeding an addiction is a compulsion. Actually taking the drugs was his choice, and again, given his stints in rehab, he knew there were other options available to him.

He didn't deserve to die, but that doesn't mean that the responsibility for his death didn't ultimately rest with himself.

Personally, I do feel sympathy for him, but I don't excuse him either.

And, I feel worse for the people who knew him and who loved him who have to deal with the results.
