Well, it's silly and childish to lose respect for people over fandom shipping preferences, but whatever bakes your cake!

If they want to ship it -AS AN INCEST PAIRING-, then that's fine. Take into account the established, canon relationship between the two, take into account how they view each other as siblings, and go ahead and ship it. I've got absolutely no problem with that, and if you can make it work, my hat is off to you.

My problem--where I 'lose respect'--is when they treat their dynamic like something that it isn't. They AREN'T "childhood friends that grew up together," they explicitly define the other as their sister/brother. That's the POINT of their relationship, and people not getting it is what causes me to lose respect for them; not the mere fact that they ship the pairing.

I lose respect because they drastically miss the dymanic between the two or pretend it doesn't exist. Whereas if they DEALT with the established relationship...? Well, that's good writing then.

Well, yes, it is annoying and stupid when people ignore important canon. But why does respect have to factor in? Can't you just say "I think it's annoying and stupid that you're ignoring canon" and leave it at that?

Oh, well. At least you're not playing the strict schoolteacher trying to make sure they do it right or else get a slap on the wrist.

Well, doesn't a loss of respect sort of follow automatically? Because it's not (at least I don't think it is) a WILLFUL ignorance, it's a failure to understand the canon in the first place.

I'm not saying it's a big deal, I'm not claiming for an instant that if someone ships Edgeworth/Franziska I automatically think of them as the scum of the earth; and I admit to being puzzled over the backlash to my phrasing the secret as such (I'm considerably on the newer side to this community).

For what it's worth, sorry I got snarky with you. Phrasing's key; say something in a way that sounds bratty/elitist/confrontational/etc, people'll take it the wrong way. Of course, you also shouldn't have to proofread everything you wanna say that's on your mind...it's complicated.

I dunno. As an author and someone who loves the characters and the multifaceted bonds between them, I take extra care when planning to make sure that what I want to do fits into canon; and if there's a conflict? Well, I try to adjust my story to it rather than adjusting the canon to my story. These two characters in particular have one of my favorite relationships in fandom, a wonderful sibling dynamic. And if I see someone writing them in a way that blatantly conflicts or contradicts what's been explicitly established, it sort of irks me and rubs me the wrong way as both a reader and a writer.

So yeah. I kind of understand the backlash, but... bleh, I don't know where I was going for this. Anyway, don't worry about initial snippiness.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not above taking liberties with canon here and there, my views of characters may be a little different from canon/widely accepted fanon, but I like to respect canon cause without it I wouldn't have my favorite characters to write about.
