14 - I notice I'm like that now as well. For the fandoms I get into, the majority of the pairings I like are the ones that aren't popular or are obscure.

15 - I've done things like that at times (though not using the references you use) to characterize/define the characters. I like being able to organize them... it's also a fun way to waste time.

18 - I LOVE THAT SONG!!! And I know how you feel. I'm not really religious but watching that movie and listening to that song makes me wish I was.

19 - Ouch.

24 - Yeah, I think the rabid fangirls and slashing would be inevitable... y'know, if it became really popular

37 - Image

38 - That's sweet!

OP of #37 here. I'm curious as to how, exactly, it's unreasonable of me to expect people to have at least some firsthand knowledge of series canon before they dive headfirst into my or any fandom and start flinging their fic around. I--no, wait, let's try this another way.

I've seen precisely no episodes of Bleach, but I know what the story's about, and I've read the wiki article and seen a lot of screenshots and icons and some really hot smutty fanart, and I've read all the posts on it in this community. Also, I know some people on my friendslist really like it and I trust their taste. I think Orihime is really pretty and the boys are all totally hot. I certainly feel like I know the canon never mind that I've got absolutely no firsthand acquaintance with it whatsoever.

Would you like to read my Bleach fanfic?

Maybe I should just learn to shut my mouth like you whenever these types of secrets pop up. I constantly seem to argue myself into corners jkasdfkasdfkk

I believe that it's nice for people to do some research before they go and write a fanfic, but I don't believe that they have to WATCH it.

I made a huge, long argument a while ago over my feelings for this topic. If you'd like to read the thread I completely exploded, here's the link: http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/78818.html?thread=12670946#t12670946

I can understand why people get frustrated - I've had those same feelings of frustration looking for good piece of fanfiction within the loads of what I consider crap - however, I'm more frustrated with the situation overall than the people. They're allowed for fan over and enjoy things the way they want and I enjoy it the way I want. Our opinions clash but we both have a right to do it our own way, and no one is more right than the other. Besides, just because someone DOESN'T watch a series doesn't mean that their fics will necessarily be bad... there's more working against them, 'cause they have to do extra research, but that's about it.

And I've done that before as well... fan over something I've never seen. We have our reasons. Lack of time, not wanting to watch series too long, whatever. So holding it against people for not watching what they fan over is something that I consider petty. But that's just me.

And, sure, I'd be willing to read your story. Doesn't bother me at all knowing beforehand whether or not you watched it.

We both have our opinions. I won't hold it against you if you don't hold it against me. Like I said, I understand where you're coming from. However, I still don't agree with the opinion. It feels elitist to me. But that's just me.

because you still haven't written anything that convinces me you can possibly be a fan of a series or a character when you've NEVER SEEN IT. It's not elitist. It makes no sense!

Makes sense to me. My friends fan over characters all the time that I hear their backstories, trials and tribulations long before I ever watch the series (and I willingly let them).

*Shrug* Whatever.

Details, details...

I'd like to find someone with balls enough to tell me my opinions suck without hiding behind an ANON.
