I'm kind of confused by all the people who went into a summer popcorn flick based on every awesome mecha/sentai/Studio Toho trope, crafted by one of the biggest nerds in Hollywood, and were disappointed when it delivered exactly what it promised.

But eh, let's focus on what's important, OP: Hot Aussie Bulldog Daddy FTW! :D

This is why "Don't like, Don't Read / Watch" is a legit phrase when used in the right situation.

Large parts of fandom seem to have a huge problem with this concept in my honest opinion.

Scuse you, Tsuburaya Pro was in there too.

(And one tiny nod to Toei.)

It delivered all the action it promised but absolutely none of the charm and humanity that Guillermo del Toro's other films have. That's why some of us were deeply disappointed. I was hoping for that rare summer blockbuster that rose above being a cash cow. Instead I got something that was almost at the level of a Michael Bay flick. Note that I said ALMOST. Nothing is as bad as Michael Bay's shit!

MTE. I went into the movie expecting a big, loud action movie with robots fighting monsters, and came out surprisingly pleased with the actual story. Could it have been better written? Sure. It was still a damn fun movie and I loved it.

I suspect it has to do with the fact most people aren't that familiar with the genres and tropes this movie is based on. Mecha, kaiju, etc etc - those are usually considered 'cult classics' specifically because people who follow the genres or connecting genres are very familiar with them, but they tend to not be well-known outside those genres. Pacific Rim, however, took these 'cult genres' and took them to the mainstream audiences. People weren't basing their expectations off of the context from which the promotional material was coming out of, they were basing this off of the promotional material itself.

But eh, let's focus on what's important, OP: Hot Aussie Bulldog Daddy FTW! :D

Mmm...yesh, this is definitely important...if the sequel doesn't have him, it will be sorely lacking...
