I think it's being less familiar with English that helps though. I've tried reading fics in German (not my mother tongue) and I had a hard time understanding - but I didn't feel... embarrassed as I do when reading in my native language. Now I read English much easier than I do German, in fact I would say that my level of reading comprehension at least is probably not that far from that of a native speaker... but it's still not my native language, y'know?

I get what you mean, but in my case I'm not embarrassed reading porn in my mother language. I do that, it's fine. It's only fanfic that feels weird.

Ah yes. Bad writing is just worse in your mother language. I suppose the amount of things that make me backspace out of a fic in my mother language is just a lot higher than with other languages... Pretty much all the ones I tried to read had atrocious grammar and spelling.
