[Picture is Dr. James Wilson from the TV show "House". He is a man with light skin and short brown hair wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and a red tie and sitting down inside an office with his legs propped up on something.]

Years ago I would watch this show obsessively and loved every bit of it. It was the only non-anime thing I loved that wasn't Harry Potter.

About two years ago I started getting chronic chest and stomach pain, but I was too poor to go to the doctor often enough for them to figure out what exactly was wrong and the medication for Gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers don't seem to work. I've been so terrified that it might be cancer I can't watch the show anymore because seeing Wilson reminds me of my own health problems and fears. I'm sorry, Wilson, you were my favorite too. [crying sad emoticon]

Too long; didn't read: I used to be able to enjoy this show. I can't anymore and I miss it so much.

Dr. Wilson is the head of the Oncology Department of the hospital the show revolves around.

GO TO THE DOCTOR YOU FUCKING MORON

IF FINANCES HAVE CHANGED AND ONLY FEAR IS HOLDING YOU BACK, KNOW REAL PAIN IS WORSE. KNOWING COULD BE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOME PAIN AND WORST PAIN

Please go to the doctor, op. There are probably free/cheap clinics in your area if finances really are hard. I've known people who have health issues but never get it checked out because they are scared and denial is easier. Remember without treatment it probably will get worse instead of better. I wish you all the best.

Do your best to find a cheap/free clinic. If you can't I hope your financial situation changes, so that you can go to a regular doctor.

Oh my fucking god does private healthcare suck. Why the hell should you be having to choose between your health and your future finances/credit? i just raeg.

The UK NHS provides a free abdominal pain symptom checker, if you need to talk your way off the ledge before seeking medical help.

Medicare isn't the panacea it's made out to be, however: Just ask the people still waiting to be seen at the local Outpatients clinic at the only hospital in my town -- these are people who do not have a GP because there are not enough non-specialist Drs. because medicare pays the specialists better -- the people in the "free" clinic (who pay for it with their taxes) who have been sitting there 8+ hours at least.

Not that I'm saying I prefer privatized nedicine (ugh, no); just that people who tout "universal healthcare" as the be-all and end-all forget or gloss over the fact that, in some places, universal healthcare is also universally bad.

Yeah but private healthcare is actually worse, in terms of both absolute outcomes and efficiency; in the USA the over-60s (ie. Medicare recipients) are the only group that rate their health coverage as more 'satisfactory' than not, and the private healthcare system is thought to be a major reason why even well-off Americans live shorter lives than similarly well-off people in other developed countries. For these privileges, the US spends 2.5x as much of its GDP on healthcare as the OECD average, while most other OECD health systems deliver better outcomes and longer lifespans. tl;dr private healthcare is the objectively worst, even for the people who can afford to use it.

That sort of depends - if you're rich *enough* the private healthcare in the states is pretty much the best thing ever. It's just that the "rich enough" bar is *so* high that most people get screwed over.

"Universal healthcare" is not the same everywhere.

Obviously there are ways to do it badly. But, frankly, for a lot of people that's going to be better than the *nothing* they'd get otherwise.

Yes but in Britain it works, I haven't lived under another system except Australia which was a sort of hybrid and I remember having to pay and then getting some money back but not all. Anyhow living in Britain I feel very lucky, I've recently had MRIs and some other tests, no problems, all done in good time. I've never had anything but good care. I also work in an NHS service and we give really good care to our patients.

I've been ill for years without any conclusive diagnosis and watching House would make me cry because at the end of every episode the patient got a diagnosis. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)

Hope you get well soon, anon.

Please go to the doctor again if/once you are a financial position to do so, though I'd suggest a different one this time that can better help you figure out what it is. I had similar symptoms (chest pain, stomach pain, GERD meds not working) and it turned out to be a nasty case of gallbladder problems (diagnosed after a quick ultrasound) and my life became 95% better when I got my gallbladder taken out. So that's a possibility. I hope you are able to get some answers and relief someday!
