Is a Creative Writing master's worth it?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Writing is my passion and I want a career related to it. I know it's one of those degrees that doesn't get you much and the field lacks jobs and is extremely competitive besides. But I think to get anywhere with it, I have to make the decision whether or not to dedicate myself to it, or keep it as a casual hobby... what do you think? Is it stupid?

Do you have an external means of financial support?

I say go for it if you can afford it, just be aware that being wholly dedicated isn't a guarantee of success. Neither is talent or skill or personality, for that matter. It's the kind of field where a person is either a shining success or a dismal failure, and the difference between the two is an unpleasant and random mix of luck and politics.

The way I understood it is it depends on how willing you are to put yourself out there, submitting and reading like the world's going to end tomorrow, and where you go. There are a couple schools in England and one in Toronto that are really good. Whether it's the opportunities, the teachers, or what I couldn't say, but the writers I used to hang out with were constantly talking about them.

Honestly? I wouldn't. It means probably incurring more debt [though I suppose that depends], for a field that's very, very likely that you won't find a job in.

If you have external support? Then maybe - but I wouldn't count it and I *would* think over it very very hard.

I wouldn't, if I were you. Just read all sorts of subjects and write like crazy and try to keep pushing yourself outside your comfort zones to get better in your spare time.

You'd be better off choosing a related major, like Journalism or something. Because a Creative Writing M.A. is a degree that means literally nothing. You'll still get opportunities based on merit and ability rather than the degree, so unless you feel your abilities could stand on their own after 6+ years, it wouldn't benefit you that much career-wise.
