Lawyers. My sister is attempting law school right now and the more I hear about the system the more I feel that it's less a functional system for professional education and more a way to produce a tiny handful of lawyers with actual career prospects and a large body of people in massive debt. I have my doubts about her being able to actually make the cut, but she's a master networker and has already secured a paid position with some local legal agency so I think she'll ultimately manage. Most of her classmates probably won't be so fortunate.

On the entirely opposite end of the spectrum, people who have an ongoing pattern of treating disabled people like crap inexplicably deciding they want to go into teaching spec ed. Some of them actually have the skill set to obtain the degree, and that troubles me.

...buh? Treating them like crap how? Because this, like, is a totally bizarre trend.

On one particularly uncomfortable occasion,verbal harassment and wishing violence/abuse on people, but mostly stuff like giving people grief for their impairments or being shocked and disturbed by the fact that there are disabled people in our teaching program.

Some of my classmates really should not be going into this field.

(reason I asked; I was wondering if you were one of those special tumblr snowflakes who thought that ABA teaching for autistic kids was oppressive and might class it as 'treating disabled people like crap'. No really such people exist.)

Maybe not, but I wouldn't brush them off quite so quickly, either- I don't think ABA in its current form is automatically abusive but ANY therapy can be done abusively, and from what I know I think that if done carelessly it could contribute to the kind of compliance that makes disabled children especially vulnerable to abusers. I know of at least one set of parents who had to pull their kid out of badly done ABA because it was messing him up, so it's possible that some of the people you're calling 'snowflakes' may be speaking from firsthand experience.

And yeah, it sucks. I sometimes feel like teaching in general and spec ed in particular tends to attract both the best and worst kinds of people simultaneously.

Yeah, that's pretty much what law school is.

I really think that I would be good at being a lawyer (and yes I am aware of things like "most lawyers never enter the courtroom") but the financial load of going to lawschool is just far too wildly impractical for me to ever do it.
