What career ambitions make you wince when announced? Wince as in 'uh, you should maybe look into that a bit more', or 'well do you have any thoughts about what you'll do if that doesn't work out?'

"Professional Author" - at least when it comes from someone who obviously wants it to be their full time job.

The only other time I've really winced was someone who, literally, had so little empathy for people they started making fun of someone who'd attempted [and yes, failed] to kill themselves...and were planning on going into a field where they'd most likely end up working with several people with mental illnesses.

Honestly, anything humanities and art related. I wish I didn't, but I wish that (& I may sound kind of arrogant saying this, because I understand not everyone wants to be rich), that more jobs in those fields were at least not a damnation on the pay front.

Doctor, because the majority of people I know who have said this don't have the drive or the grades but still insist they're going to do the MCAT and apply and everything, and I just keep thinking "you're going to waste so much money and time on this..." One of my friends actually does have the grades, and she has the ambition and work ethic necessary, but she got rejected on her first round of applications and decided to go for nursing instead.

Someone in my family wants to become a quantum physicist. They can't do basic maths. Nevertheless, this is what he's going for, when he's failed 3/4 classes at community college the first two semesters he went.) Our local colleges don't offer degrees in this, from what he says to the family, but he's dead certain he can get there from here.

Another wanted to become a Veterinarian but 1. can't handle the sight of blood/damage on those vet programs on Animal Planet and 2. has lots of trouble with maths and sciences. (It took years for them to realize that they weren't suited, everyone else knew it right away.)

:( I love them, I just don't understand really assessing the pros/cons of a job and realistically evaluating your capabilities. I'd love to be a forensic specialist but I know for a fact I'd be horrible at it. As much as I love the idea of the career, I understand the realistic problems I'd face (gore and smells primarily) and so I didn't waste my time on what I knew to be out of my reach.

Psychotherapist/counselor. Unless you're going for clinical psychology or psychiatry (which obviously the people I wince at never are), the pay sucks and they always have super-fluffy reasons for wanting to do it.

Anyone who wants a science-heavy profession (engineer, chemist, physicist) when they aren't good at math. You can't just be okay at math, you actually have to be good at math.

Actually, I just sort of wince anytime someone who clearly has no idea what they're getting into makes an ambitious life decision. Struggling with your first semester of pre-Algebra, and you're going to become a chemical engineer? Yeah. Good luck with that.

Honestly, housewife/househusband. I know you're supposed to be all PC and say that that's everyone else choice, but I honestly don't understand a) wanting to be completely financially dependent on your spouse b)being around your kids all day long and c)feeling no need to live up to your potential. Mostly it just seems you'd be screwed if you ever broke up.

I guess, in general, I'm just more bothered by lack of ambition. I can understand someone going for a job I'd hate (like accountant) if they seem passionate about it. I can accept people running off to Hollywood and trying to make it in the film industry, or wanting to be astronauts - because hey, even if you fail, at least you know you tried to fulfill your dream. I can even accept if someone says hey just want to do menial work to get money for hobby they're really passionate about but can make a living with.


I just don't get people who just seem to have no passion in what they do whatsoever. I do not understand how people can live like that.

I think it's better you aim high, then if it doesn't work out, you still have other options.

Lawyer, if you're in the US. With the job market as it is in the US, you can get into a lot of debt going to law school and there's just an over-saturation of lawyers in the US.

Anything that doesn't have a stable income or a guaranteed job permanency I'm going to expect the person to have a backup plan.

I mean, I love writing but I'm not an idiot. I have several backup plans.

I haven't heard it as much since I'm starting to get into the actual professional side of things, but in high school and college I'd definitely have to say musician and writer.

Musician for the kids who'd be like "yeah I'm going to start a rock band" when they only know the basic of guitar or, worse, never touched an instrument in their life. (And they also seemed to be the ones who made fun of band geeks. You know, the ones who actually knew a thing or two about music.) I saw this one more in high school than college.

And then writer for the handful of guys I've run into that start bragging about their stuff after I mention writing in my free time a bit. I've had about three guys actually send me their stuff after those kind of conversations and they almost always invariably reek of bad self-inserts and power fantasies. :\

For some reason half of my friends are all like "I want to move to Japan and become a video game designer/ manga artist" and most of them failed high school Japanese and can't draw or program computers at all, and aren't taking college classes in it, and are failing the classes they are taking.

I try to be supportive and all but inside I'm like... good luck guys.

Lawyers. My sister is attempting law school right now and the more I hear about the system the more I feel that it's less a functional system for professional education and more a way to produce a tiny handful of lawyers with actual career prospects and a large body of people in massive debt. I have my doubts about her being able to actually make the cut, but she's a master networker and has already secured a paid position with some local legal agency so I think she'll ultimately manage. Most of her classmates probably won't be so fortunate.

On the entirely opposite end of the spectrum, people who have an ongoing pattern of treating disabled people like crap inexplicably deciding they want to go into teaching spec ed. Some of them actually have the skill set to obtain the degree, and that troubles me.

Basically anyone who wants a job that is largely to do with fame.

For every A-list megastar actor, there's a shitload of out-of-work extras.

For every bestselling author, there's a shitload of people who get every manuscript rejected.

For every master painter, there's a shitload of people with a back room full of canvases that no one has ever seen.

For every pro athlete, there's a shitload of people who are on reserves for their local teams.

For every hugely famous video game designer, there's a shitload of people designing indie games that get maybe four people playing it.

Being famous and being the top of your field is goddamn HARD. And you can say, "Well, I want it more than anyone else!!" - but everyone else is saying that, too. Aim to be GOOD in your field. Aim to be your PERSONAL best. But saying your life ambition is to be the very best like no one ever was is dooming you to failure. (For every champion of the Pokemon league, there's a shitload of people that get one or two badges then give up and go home...)

Fanfic writers who say they want to be published before they're 25, for several reasons. First, that's just not realistic for most people unless your parents own a publishing company, and writing fanfiction =/= writing fiction no matter how many times people bring up E.L. James, etc. Second, it reeks of that "OMG 25 is so ancient I might as well be dead!" hysteria that is so depressingly common in fandom.

There's a girl I'm forced to be around that honest to God has outlined her career path as graduate from college with communications degree -> be on The Voice.
