(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)But your standard plumeria and tuberose flower lei? We sell them at the airport for $3-4 each, we teach tourists how to make them, we wear them in fancy prom pictures. Pretty much the only "culture" related things we'll sort of snicker at is 1) the plastic ones because they are cheapo to the max and 2) in a formal setting women wear flower leis whereas men wear green leaf/kukui nut ones.
And don't get me started on graduations where we make hundreds of candy leis and slam fucking inflatable floaty rings around people's heads.
We are not delicate fairies who drop dead from heart attacks whenever we see someone wearing a lei with - gasp - natively Hawaiian or Polynesian flowers.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 01:58 am (UTC)(link)Have you noticed the exact same kind of automatic trolling that happens whenever the topic of race or gender appear on the horizon? Don't get me wrong, I am very sensitive to race and gender issues myself, but I really wish some people would get a grip on themselves before descending into hysteria. /rant
Back on topic, I just spent a few weeks in several Polynesian islands where I was given several lei and yes, taught how to make them, so I was nodding along as I read your comment about tourists!
