Proud of converting someone

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you got any stories about converting someone to a fandom you like?

The one that I'm proudest of is that my incessant complaints about the Harry Potter movies convinced my brother to read the books. I didn't even try to talk him into it. I guess he just got sick of listening to me, :P.

I convinced a friend of mine who hated Dark Souls to give it another try. He loves it now.

You convinced me to play Dishonored! I wasn't going to because I don't generally care for steampunk, but it was brilliant.

If you like Dishonored, go play Thief -- all three games are on GoG and the GoG forums will show you how to get them running nice. They're older and therefore clunkier, but the brilliance of Dishonored is the brilliance of Thief.

I turned my parents into Elementary fans. It's awesome.

I made my mom and aunt, and then my best internet friend, watch Baccano! with me.

We are all very happy with this. :D

I converted my friends in middle school not only to anime, but to yaoi at the same time.

I let my best friend borrow one of my Discworld books because I though she might like it. Now almost her entire family has been converted to Terry Pratchett fans, and this summer my friend's mom made herself a Luggage costume, went to the North American Discworld Convention, and bought me Ankh-Morepork stamps for watching her cats. I never got that book back, but I feel it was more than worth having to buy a new copy.

I got both of my parents into Harry Potter, Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials and Jim C. Hines. I also got my mom hooked on gaming, Hunger Games, Girl Genius and Young Wizards, and I introduced my dad to anime and Avatar: the Last Airbender. Figured I owed them for getting me hooked on Tolkien, Lewis, James Herriot, Calvin and Hobbes, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, old-school sci-fi/fantasy and fairy tales in general.

I've also introduced a few friends to Studio Ghibli and Discworld, and I got one of my favorite professors hooked on Girl Genius. It's always fun to spread the geekiness around.

I just got my brother to get The World Ends with You, because I just bought the game like a week ago and I desperately want to talk with someone about it but don't know anyone else who's played it. I was surprised he actually bought it, since he NEVER listens to my recommendations on anything. (I don't know why he doesn't, because we have similar tastes in basically everything, when we discover things on our own. But yeah.) Anyway, he started playing it and he likes it and now I can't wait for him to finish it so we can talk about it together. ^_^

It's a great game, isn't it? I'm glad your brother likes it, too, 'cause it really is a lot of fun to be able to geek out over stuff like that with friends and family. Y'know, now that I think about it, it's been too long since I last played TWEWY. I ought to dust it off sometime soon.

Dust it off!

And then talk about it with me! :P (Just kidding.)

But yeah, it's awesome to have people IRL to geek out with. :)

I got my mother, my sister, my brother-in-law, two cousins, and three separate groups of friends into Doctor Who who then proceeded to get some of their friends into Doctor Who.

Ohhhhh yeah.

I also got my 85-year-old grandma into Discworld. That was fun.

Not really stories of interest, but I have a habit of convincing people to play video games and series I love (Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei, Mass Effect, Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, Deus Ex...), just by talking about said game/series so damn much while I'm playing.

Although how people got into MGRising while listening to me complain about the bosses, is way beyond me.

I got my Dad into Firefly. Since he got me into a lot of scifi when I was a kid, it felt good to give back.

I got my best friend hooked on several shows over the years, but I'm proudest of Buffy. She didn't want to give it a chance and one day she came over when I was watching it. She started watching with me and loved it. It was a repeat and I tried to get her to go somewhere in the middle of the ep but she had to finish it.

I converted about half the people I know to the Shin Megami Tensei series.

...I used to be proud of that.

Then they realized what a cash cow Persona could be.

If I'm going to play a soulless cash-grabbing sequel-upon-sequel-tastic fanservicey franchise with a theme so utterly insipid it's painful, I'm going to play the ultimate one.

I converted my boyfriend to reading all of my fic. He's even betaing my latest, and he's so excited about it that we have lengthy plot discussion about it :-D

Oh, and we've been together for 12 years, and this is the first time he's ever gotten into fandom with me.

I got my roommate to play the Mass Effect trilogy

during sad parts, she curses me out :D
