I think fans holding up Hermione as the "ultimate role model" came from always comparing her to Bella Swan. Anyone would seem like an ideal compared to Bella.

I agree that she's not perfect and she has a lot of flaws that may or may not have been actively addressed in the books, but I don't think she's as awful as you're portraying her to be. Wishing death to her is a bit harsh.

fans holding up Hermione as the ultimate role model came way before Bella Swan

fans holding up Hermione as the ultimate role model comes from a variety of sources - partly because Hermione is badass, and smart, and very frequently is correct (9 times out of 10, listening to Hermione is the correct choice - JKR is very much on her side throughout the books). partly because, well, Hermione is a smart outsider, and if there's one character that nerds can relate to it's going to be that.

i think that's most of it really. she is badass and smart and we can relate to her as bookish nerds.

AYRT

Oh, I'm not disputing that Hermione is awesome or worthy of being a role model. She's certainly a better role model than Bella Swan. I just remember seeing a lot of Hermione and Bella comparisons that portrayed Hermione as perfect and Bella as someone with no good qualities which made me think that's where the fans went a little overboard about their Hermione love.
