I don't see Hermione as Umbridge at all, and I actually think her character softened/grew considerably. I do agree, however, that she had a scary streak for a while there and was a bit disappointed it wasn't explored more.

That's a more than a little extreme. Yes she had issues, but what kid doesn't? She grew up enough to stop lording it over people's heads that she's so much more widely-read than her peers. When that's how you grew up, that's what seems normal until you meet others and experience the world.

Also, you're wrong. Hermione is not anywhere near Umbridge. She is far more intelligent than Umbridge, and works to bring about respect for other races. Sure, she's a little (okay, a fair bit) annoying, but who WASN'T when s/he was a teen? I know that I was downright insufferable with all my dreams about saving the world from itself and my criticisms of the way things worked.

Also, you seem to have forgotten that she was a kind and helpful person once she outgrew being a arrogant twit in her first year. If she really had been like Umbridge, she would never have stayed friends with Ron and Harry, and rather ratted them out each and every time they did something wrong.

I cringe when people hold her up as the ultimate role model. She's basically the teenage Umbridge. And not all girls aspire to be condescending, self-serving, violently abusive hypocrites firmly convinced of their rightness and their own superiority solely because they read more than those around them. To me the most unforgivable thing Bellatrix ever did was not killing her in Deathly Hallows when she had the chance.

Secret because: Hermione's fans are many and rabid.

You know what, I was actually a bit too old when Harry potter came out - but you know, I was glad to see a girl who was smart and thirsty for knowledge and unapologetic for that. Intelligence and (academic) ambition are looked down on in many teenage groups, and yeah, while Hermione might seem a bit stuck up every now and then, I'll take her any day over young characters who just care about dating or football.

I think teenage Umbridge is a tad harsh and unrealistic. I can't picture her forcing a student to hold a Blood Quill, and carve "I must not tell lies" into a their skin, or serving Voldemort.

But you know, this is obviously a potato potahto situation.
