I don't see Hermione as Umbridge at all, and I actually think her character softened/grew considerably. I do agree, however, that she had a scary streak for a while there and was a bit disappointed it wasn't explored more.

Yeah, I didn't notice Hermione's scary jealousy streak until I read the books a second time when I was older. Like the incident when she orders a bunch of birds to fly and attack Ron because she sees him with someone else. At first when I read it I didn't think much on it, but now I find it creepy. Most people in the real world would break off a friendship if one of their friends attacked them like that (for a more realistic parallel: if they sicked their dog on them).

na

and in the real world fred and george would have been considered dangerous delinquents and probably would have been put in jail (some of their "pranks" were legitimately terrible)

Who said anything about Fred or George?

And when all these things are treated differently by everyone else in the book than they'd be treated by everyone in real life, that's when you realize

you're reading

FICTION

True, dat. People are reading way too much significance into something that was supposed to be a funny 'hey, Hermione is actually jealous!' scene.

I think that's more symptomatic of how fucked-up the wizarding world's culture is in general than anything specific to Hermione. Aren't love potions regarded as "one of those stupid things teenagers to" rather than "drugging and raping someone"? To say nothing of the liberal use wizards make of memory-erasing charms, especially against Muggles. There's a LOT of shit in those books that's deeply disturbing if you stop and think about it for more than three seconds, so I kind of regard Hermione's behavior within that context.

AYRT. I actually agree with this, which is why I said when I was older I found a lot of things infinitely more creepy than simply brushing it off when I was a kid. It's kind of why I don't really find a lot of things as romantic or amazing in Harry Potter anymore. And why some of the only couples I can tolerate are Molly/Arthur and Bill/Fleur.

DYSTOPIA!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah she's not perfect but that's not the same thing as being a literal nazi sympathizer

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Who said anything about her being a nazi sympathizer?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
OP did when they compared her to Umbridge

tbf though no one in this thread did & it was not correct for me to bring it up in this context. i'm sorry for that.

I said it downthread, but the birds didn't bother me so much because they were a moment of anger, and she'd been working on making birds appear at the time.

But deliberately dating a guy she hated to make Ron jealous? Was creepy and gross.

Hexing a guy during tryouts to give her friend a better shot? A) Cheating. B) Doesn't trust Ron to do well on his own. C) Doesn't trust Harry to be a good team captain.

Tricking a bunch of kids into signing a blank contract, which then turns out to scar a girl's face for life?

Evil.

Ugh. Even when I was a kid, that scene always left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't like her scaring the one girl's face either, but at least that has a springing board from which one can attempt to justify it re: Umbridge.

But the quidditch scene? It's fucking quidditch! An intermural sport! There are literally no horrible consequences for not making the team other than maybe feeling a bit rubbish about yourself. And like you said, it reeks of a lack of faith in both the physical abilities of her friends and their ability to handle disappointment/hold control over their own lives.
