If there were no screws and it was just adhered to the wall, then it really wasn't meant for people to use as a handle.

Here's the thing: How was I supposed to know before hand? Some things have hidden screws, look at some of the toilet paper roll holders. And how was I supposed to know the whole damn wall was decaying underneath? Hmm?

How was the maintenance people supposed to know that you were a moron who wouldn't bother learning how your new pad worked? Hmm?

Oh what? Was I supposed to go around the place BANGING on the walls to make sure "Nope!! Not strong enough!!" as tiles fall off?

Pray tell, was that the ~oh so right way~ to tell if the apartment was livable, oh asscrack nonny?

How was I supposed to know before hand?

Are you kidding? The same way you're supposed to know what a wall socket is and that you shouldn't stick a knife in there. Do you expect someone to point out what every little pre-installed thing in your apartment is and what it does? If your soap dish looks anything like the first picture you posted upthread it's pretty obvious that it's not a handle.

Look, it sucks that this happened to you. If I were in the same situation I probably would have grapped the soap dish as well to steady me, but that wouldn't change the fact that a soap dish is not a handle. And honestly, the fact that you didn't know doesn't change the fact that it's not a handle.

The state of the wall is an entirely different thing, but the handle/soap dish issue is really your own fault.

Then WHY is every HANDLED soap dish I'm looking at one Google calling it a HANDLE?

Either the industry is wrong or I'm wrong.

And I am NOT denying that the soap dish is my fault. It IS. We will PAY for that. Just not the wall.

because the people naming it don't know it's not called that

what baffles me is that she refuses to take the maintenance guy at his word but is perfectly happy with random C-list internet retail sites (but not other people on the internet)

so in other words, if it doesn't support her claim, it's wrong

Well, you didn't believe the maintenance guy when he told you. Next time, just lie. "I don't know what happened, it just fell! I think it's because the wall behind it is crumbling!" Maybe that will work.

Well, with the dish? It probably would have helped to know that it wasn't meant as an actual handle - which isn't on the maintenance person. As for the wall, chances are the *maintenance* person wouldn't know because, at least where I live, it's not generally standard procedure to rip up tile and check when getting an apartment ready. [Also, I'm suspecting it's something with the apartment above you that's the issue there - at least, always has been when I've had similar problems in my apartments.]

Also, you may have been perfectly nice idk, but always be nice to your maintenance people. Generally, if you're nice to them they're more than willing to help you out [like the anon up-thread said], but blaming them for something they aren't responsible for [like the soap dish]? That means they're not going to do any favors like that.

I never blamed then in person. I was civil, told him what happened, and then he said the damage was more extensive than he'd been told (we told him exactly what was wrong and noticed the other damage after the fact when we got off the phone, cause, you know, holy shit, thing came off wall).

I may be a bitch online, but I know when exactly and how exactly to talk to people when I need to.
