Are you in the UK? Cause that's pretty common there, I've heard so many similar real life horror stories it's not even funny.

Seeing as you're both at fault, you should only have to pay half. Get in touch with a lawyer if you can.

since pretty much every crib in the UK has a bath tub, it's pretty much a given that there are as many horror stories lol

I know a few people who have gone through something similar, only with worse results; they ended up losing a fortune, more repairs than was expected, contractors who bailed, law suits, therapy etc

trust me it's very depressing stuff, so I won't go further
