Paperwhite user over here. When I first made the switch from paper to digital, I got the cheapest Kindle model, and it was awful, I couldn't read it in anything but sunlight or fluorescent light without getting a headache, the screen was too glossy for a reading lamp, and there was ghosting with the text. Amazon immediately traded it in for the Paperwhite (so long as you send it back within thirty days, it's no-questions-asked), and I love it. It's comfortable and lightweight, the text is crisp and easy to modify for my comfort, and the adjustable internal screen light is perfect, which is one reason I prefer it to a bright tablet (the other reason being that it holds a single charge for weeks, so I can leave it in my bag and go). I hardly use the WiFi, but it connects right away in most public places I've been. All it can really do is buy and read books, sure (there's a black-and-white browser, but I'd hardly about to use that), but I've got a phone, so that's fine with me. Overall, I highly recommend it for avid readers.

One major flaw to the Paperwhite is that you run the risk of getting a model with blue/pink/yellow bruising on the white screen, which is what I got (read the one-star reviews for further details). From what I've read, Amazon is cool with trading it in as many times as necessary to get a good model, but you might end up going through several Paperwhites in a row with similar issues. That's why I didn't bother, it's so subtle on my own model that I'm still quite happy, but just giving you fair warning. The negative reviews also mention trouble with the touchscreen malfunctioning, but that hasn't happened for me, except now and then when it's charging while I'm reading.

Do you know if Amazon would be so agreeable if I bought my Paperwhite from a third party dealer instead of them and it has this problem?

I don't know since I buy direct through Amazon, but since it's manufactured by Amazon and the bruising is a known problem that can't be blamed on another seller, I lean on the side of saying they would still be agreeable. I was a bit surprised by how easily they let me trade in my first Kindle (since my complaint was "I don't like it"), so I think it's kind of their baby that they want everybody to be as happy about as possible.

Hello, I'm the anon who was also considering buying a Paperwhite, so thanks for being so detailed about your experiences with it! I have a question, though. As far as I can tell, the negative 1 star reviews on Amazon date from October 2012, which I'm assuming is the release date of the new Kindle.

My question is, when did you get yours? I'm trying to see if this is a problem that newly-released Paperwhites had or if they still haven't fixed the issue, almost a year later.

I got mine December 2012. The latest one-star review from 2012 has comments on it as recent as July 2013 making the same complaints, so yeah, I think it's still a problem, even with the firmware update from November. But apparently the issue is quite uncommon, so that also means your chances of getting a perfectly fine Paperwhite are probably pretty good. Keep in mind that mine is also a trade-in, so there's every chance it's refurbished.

ayrt :/ oh damn. My problem is, I won't be buying it directly from Amazon and it won't be me the one who buys it. I'm not from the USA which means I have zero chances of returning it if it comes faulty. I just wanted to check if it was such a widespread problem, but I think it's worth a shot if, as you say, the issue is rare. Thank you for the info! :) Here's a duckling to repay you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV3MXD7pzkw

I have a Paperwhite (which I love!), and which I bought in January 2013. No problems with it whatsoever, and I love the screen's adjustable backlight, especially for reading in bed at night.
