Easy Readers

Do you have an E-Reader, F!S? What do you have and do you like it? I'm considering a Paperwhite.

I have a Kindle Fire. I used it for fanfic and internet browsing. It was great for a while since I could use it instead of my laptop, but since I got an iphone that's replaced my kindle and I haven't used it for a while. The only thing the Kindle has over the iphone is a bigger size and nice reading function, and an iphone can do both of that just fine and even more.
It also seemed like the battery ran out kind of quickly, but perhaps when I'm on a long road trip (like I will be soon) I'll be able to see how long it lasts w/o wifi use.

The Kindle Fire is a piece of junk. It's slow, it chugs on internet browsing, whenever it goes to sleep after a few minutes it NEVER stores browser tabs in memory and it disconnects from the wireless, so if I'm trying to use something on the internet for regular reference while playing a game on my PS3 or whatever, I have to first wait for the Fire to reconnect to the wireless which can take upwards of 10 seconds, and then I have to let the page reload which can take another several seconds. Mine has locked up on me several times and it chokes on even simple games. Its e-reader capabilities are subpar too.

I bought a Nexus 7 recently and it's so much better they're not even comparable.

I got a homebrand knockoff tablet from my local store...

I don't have any info on any e-reader but I was also considering buying a Paperwhite, so I'll stalk this thread until someone shares their experience with that model :P

Btw, I read somewhere that the Kindle Fire is kind of a tablet but a subpar one... The comments on this thread only confirm that, and that my decision not to buy one despite its shiny pretty color screen was a correct one [/relief]

I have a Kobo and I adore it. I travel a lot and it's great to have a whole library to choose from when I'm on the plane/train, or in some hotel far away from my bookshelf. It almost makes reading really big books so much easier in bed, lol.

I have a Kobo too! It's great for travelling, much better than lugging around five or six books and taking up my packing weight! XD

I have a Kobo Touch and love it to bits; in conjunction with Calibre, it kept me happily reading during a three-month trip back to the UK recently. Wouldn't be without it now.

Standard current-generation Kindle. Bad for surfing, great for general reading, awkward for searching, navigation, or highlighting. Works best if you send via Amazon's Web interface or load stuff on via Calibre. About half of my books are from Amazon. Some are from Project Gutenberg, a few are from independents like Baen and Weightless Books (sometimes cheaper, often DRM free.) Phoenix Pick has a monthly ebook giveaway, and SF Signal usually has a daily post for free or discounted science fiction ebooks. I need to get back into the habit of checking if an ebook is available direct from the publisher.

Oh other limitations:

* PDF generally is bad.
* texts with a large number of images, poetic line breaks, or monospace text passages (such as technical documentation) are generally bad.

On the other hand, it's nice to have really beefy 19th century texts in a more portable format.

I have a Kobo Touch. I love it ♥ It's small and lightweight enough to carry around everywhere.

Having books & fic on the go is the best. Also, it was cheap enough that I'm not afraid of it being stolen and never being able to afford another one again.

Paperwhite user over here. When I first made the switch from paper to digital, I got the cheapest Kindle model, and it was awful, I couldn't read it in anything but sunlight or fluorescent light without getting a headache, the screen was too glossy for a reading lamp, and there was ghosting with the text. Amazon immediately traded it in for the Paperwhite (so long as you send it back within thirty days, it's no-questions-asked), and I love it. It's comfortable and lightweight, the text is crisp and easy to modify for my comfort, and the adjustable internal screen light is perfect, which is one reason I prefer it to a bright tablet (the other reason being that it holds a single charge for weeks, so I can leave it in my bag and go). I hardly use the WiFi, but it connects right away in most public places I've been. All it can really do is buy and read books, sure (there's a black-and-white browser, but I'd hardly about to use that), but I've got a phone, so that's fine with me. Overall, I highly recommend it for avid readers.

One major flaw to the Paperwhite is that you run the risk of getting a model with blue/pink/yellow bruising on the white screen, which is what I got (read the one-star reviews for further details). From what I've read, Amazon is cool with trading it in as many times as necessary to get a good model, but you might end up going through several Paperwhites in a row with similar issues. That's why I didn't bother, it's so subtle on my own model that I'm still quite happy, but just giving you fair warning. The negative reviews also mention trouble with the touchscreen malfunctioning, but that hasn't happened for me, except now and then when it's charging while I'm reading.

Do you know if Amazon would be so agreeable if I bought my Paperwhite from a third party dealer instead of them and it has this problem?

Hello, I'm the anon who was also considering buying a Paperwhite, so thanks for being so detailed about your experiences with it! I have a question, though. As far as I can tell, the negative 1 star reviews on Amazon date from October 2012, which I'm assuming is the release date of the new Kindle.

My question is, when did you get yours? I'm trying to see if this is a problem that newly-released Paperwhites had or if they still haven't fixed the issue, almost a year later.

I have a Nook Tablet. I've always been really happy with the Nook tablet, personally, and I've really liked it. If you want a tablet, I would personally go with a standard tablet. Standard ones are generally better at the non E-reader functions. However, I've been really happy with both versions of the Nook I've had.

I have a Nook Color and I love it. I mostly use it for reading, but it's come in handy more than once when I've needed to get on the internet and my laptop wasn't at hand.

Despite not wanting a tablet, I wound up getting a Nexus 7. I like the idea of the Paperwhite and other straight-up eReaders, but the screens bother me, especially when "turning" a page (plus now I can read my comics, too.) I also played with a Kindle Fire a little and I didn't really hate it, but it definitely didn't feel as nice. Also I like the fact that the Nexus is just an Android tablet and it's not bogged down with Amazon's shit.

Asus or Google or whoever are actually phasing the current 16GB model out (they actually announced the new one recently, right after I got mine,) so that could help with cost. I got mine for $60 less than what I was expecting to pay.

I have a KOBO GLO. I was considering a Paperwhite too at first, but I didn't want to be bound to Amazon back then.
Kobo Glo can read EPUB files so I had no problems buying and downloading an eBook at another website where the book was cheaper. I also like the fact that I can use a memory card.

I am pretty satisfied with it.

Oh, I was under the impression that you could read epub files with Kindles. Isn't that the case? o__o I already have a ton of stuff on pdf and doc, and a converter to switch them to epub. I was planning on uploading them directly without going through Amazon; I'm most likely not to purchase from them but to download from sites like gutenberg. Can't you do that with a Paperwhite? (concerned anon)

Yeah I remember doing some research on Kobo vs Kindle and everything told me that to read regular epubs on Kindle you had to use some fancy programs to convert it or something. With Kobo, it can read pretty much anything, even pdfs. It's great.

I have a Kindle 3 (the one with the keyboard) that I've had for about a year and a half now, and I love it. It doesn't have a light, but paper books don't have lights so it doesn't really bother me. And if you leave the wifi turned off the battery lasts a really long time (around a month or so I'd say?).

'e-readers' are electronic readers, not easy readers
