I have a KOBO GLO. I was considering a Paperwhite too at first, but I didn't want to be bound to Amazon back then.
Kobo Glo can read EPUB files so I had no problems buying and downloading an eBook at another website where the book was cheaper. I also like the fact that I can use a memory card.

I am pretty satisfied with it.

Oh, I was under the impression that you could read epub files with Kindles. Isn't that the case? o__o I already have a ton of stuff on pdf and doc, and a converter to switch them to epub. I was planning on uploading them directly without going through Amazon; I'm most likely not to purchase from them but to download from sites like gutenberg. Can't you do that with a Paperwhite? (concerned anon)

Kindle doesn't to epub. It prefers mobi and most independent sites will offer both. I've not tested epub to mobi conversion, but it shouldn't be a big deal since they're both XML-based. (In most cases they're both XHTML, epub optionally can use a different flavor of XML that also has a strong structural bias.)

I've not found that conversion of PDF to anything is reliable, except maybe PDF->PostScript or PDF->massive stack of raster files at print resolution. It depends on whether the raw text is embedded in the PDF file or not. The structure of PDF documents usually involves typography-dependent line breaks, and trying to convert that into flowing paragraphs is usually a big pain in the rear.

At any rate, Calibre should handle the conversion, and Amazon offers their own epub->mobi conversion.

Edited to add: Gutenberg offers multiple Kindle-compatible formats, including:

* mobi (called "Kindle" on their download pages)
* HTML
* plain text.

Another addition: Plain text from gutenberg might need to be reformatted to deal with linebreak problems.

Edited to deal with more experimentation: Calibre has settings to handle that.

ayrt This is super late so I don't know if you'll se this, but thank you for the explanation! I'll guess I'll have to tinker more with what I already have on my PC, but it's a relief to know I can convert it :)

No, Kindles won't read epubs. It's really not a big deal though, I use Calibre to convert any epubs I have into mobi files. And I'm pretty sure Gutenberg lets you download in various formats rather than just epub.

ayrt OK, thanks for the clarification!

Yeah I remember doing some research on Kobo vs Kindle and everything told me that to read regular epubs on Kindle you had to use some fancy programs to convert it or something. With Kobo, it can read pretty much anything, even pdfs. It's great.
