I have to finish the first season, but she seems pretty abusive to me. And isn't the show a prequel of sorts to Psycho?

DA - She is abusive and yes, the show is supposed to be a prequel to the movie. The people who says things like "she's not as bad as or the same as the movie version character" are tinhatters.

Yeah, she seemed pretty abusive to me and we know how this story ends. It doesn't mean she is a bad character; she is interesting and the actress is really good. But I would not like Norma raising my child if I had one.

Except she isn't the same. Their relationship is still unhealthy, but in the movies Norma kept Norman away from everyone else and taught him that sex was evil and all other women were whores.

...and her character in Bates Motel has done those same things. Not to the same extent re: keeping him away from other people, but she's clearly growing into the movie character. Almost as if this was like a prequel or something...

Not really.

“The idea of doing a contemporary prequel made it clear that what we were doing was something that was inspired by Psycho, but not an homage to Psycho. And that was a big difference to us,” says Cuse.

“We just wanted to sort of take these characters and the setup as inspiration,” he later adds. “So, no, we don't really view any of [the original movie and its remakes and previous adaptations] as canon. And, in fact, the mythology that you think is what dictates the relationship between Norma and Norman is probably not what it's going to turn out to be.”

That's not evidence of what the show is like - that's just what the people who are making the show *wanted* to do. Nothing there tells me if they were successful at it or not.

If they want the movies to not be canon, then they're not canon. It's their show.

It's a prequel like NBC's Hannibal is a prequel; it's not meant to directly fit in with the original source material.

But we know the end point of both Hannibal and Psycho. I mean, I have no reason to believe that Norma is not a bad mother even if Bates Motel is not exactly like Psycho.
