Well you can find variety! With, uh, Robin and the hot spouse of choice. Or go on tumblr and roll around in "manhandling" (Gerome/Inigo). And... yeah those are your options.
I'm with you on this one though. It's so cliche to me. Sensitive girl teaches troubled boy how to embrace feelings. Wow. I guess in a game so rife with pairings that have absolutely no chemistry fandom has to latch onto something that has a little bit there. Plus herd mentality. What gets popular stays popular.
Wait around a bit until the Awakening fandom calms down. If it's anything like fandoms around older games the popular pairings shift dramatically after a while when the big one stops being the "cool" thing to be into.

I'm honestly curious. What is the appeal of Gerome/Inigo? All I've seen thus far is people latching onto that one passing sentence and then calling it their OTP. Herd mentality scares me a little, since once it's there in the FE fandom, you're a traitor to what the fandom deems canon and then you're basically an exile if you try and say you like anything else.

I think a lot of people really wanted to see some kind of queer representation, since Ylisse is the first setting without any canon queer characters in the entire series. And well, there's a convenient innuendo right there. Ylisse fandom as a whole likes to latch onto oneliners and single jokes anyway. "Twitching sword hand" for Owain, awful puns for Henry, naked Chrom posters for Frederick, all that.
A lot of fanartists are into it, and art helps too. Severa/Lucina is another one I don't get, but again, fanart draws people in.

Severa/Lucina made no sense to me until Future Past 3. Now it does.

Albeit the dynamic that they picked up from their predetermined parents could also be worth exploring.

I honestly don't like it because I feel like if Inigo was speaking that way and acting that way to a woman, people would hate him and call him disgusting. But for some reason it's okay because Gerome's a guy?

Bleh. I don't like their relationship dynamic at all. Someone in the fandom pointed me to inigo and owain's relationship instead: much more preferable IMO.

This scene, more than the "manhandling" scene, I think.

Fwiw, the Gerome/Inigo shippers I know have all denied it being about the manhandling line.

Personally I prefer him with Owain, but Gerome/Inigo is fine. I think it's got more to do with the classic asshole/weeper dynamic than the allcaps MANHANDLING. And fwiw I think it's sweet when Gerome honestly seems bothered by Inigo's mini-breakdown and can't stand Inigo's self-depreciation.
