Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!
(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)And I think there's a place for that approach. I think the Wobblie idea had a lot going for it. Although I definitely don't know if existing organizations eating smaller unions is the way to go about it, there's a lot to be said for cooperation and working together between unions across different industries, between labor in all fields.
Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!
(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)IA, to a certain extent, but I would rather behemoths like CAW do more cooperating and less coopting. But that's just my own bone to pick. Having worked in a variety of professions also leads me to think that ONE BIG UNION could not possibly address the very unique situations that crop up in individual workplaces...I mean, even within one of the smaller unions, you can run into trouble as an employee, if there are problems in your particular shop/with your particular shop steward! (Which I have never had, but I am both lucky and happy with the union support that I have had.)
Supersizing that just sounds like a bad idea just waiting to happen, IMO. Plus the Wobblies were, IIRC, very violent. Not something I want to see CAW advocating, ever, but I would not put it past them, just because of the sheer numbers they are trying to amass under one umbrella.

Wellll I think it's probably best to leave aside there to avoid getting into arguments outside the scope of the thread.
Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!
(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)Just curious (yes we will leave the other discussion aside, I probably should not have brought it up), but what are the advantages that you can see, to a union being supersized? I am not being sarcastic, I am genuinely curious, and willing to hear the other side, I could be wrong, and am willing to consider hat.
Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!
(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:09 am (UTC)(link)Again, I'm not saying that I'm universally pro-big union over small union; more just that the idea has some logic behind it and it's an idea that has its place.
