A woman was arrested recently in Russia for being an outspoken Feminist. You can also get jailed if you speak English in public. It's pretty crazy

You probably shouldn't listen to anonymous people on the internet telling you the an entire population of a foreign country is evil, racist and murderous.

You're being purposefully ignorant of the climate there, for whatever reason. There have been a large surge into anti-gay attacks in Russia lately. A man was sodomized with beer bottles and had his head crushed under a rock for coming out. A woman was attacked in a gay bar and had glass thrown into her eyes. A group of protestors who were only ~kissing~ were violently assaulted by a large crowd. These things weren't made up by the meany anons, they are actually happening. And it's disgusting that you're purposefully ignoring it to be a whiteknight.

There's homophobia in every country int he world. That doesn't mean that Russians as a whole are an evil, racist nation. Are you stupid, or just blinded by your own racism?

hmmm. For me personally, I'm taking all the "Russia sucks" sentiment to mean "the Russian government and dominant cultural attitude sucks", which I can get behind 100%. I don't think anyone here actually hates all Russians or thinks they are all horrible people.

"As a society" doesn't actually mean "every single person". It speaks of a majority.

I'm sure there are plenty of people in Russia who care about things like this and speak out. But I think if a large segment of the population is apathetic, that's worth pointing out as something that ought to be remedied.

The generalisations thrown around by than anon, as well as their judgemental tone when they speak of Russians, sounds horribly racist. I'm not even Russian, but I've seen this type of comments. In fact, it's the same thing I hear from some antisemites, who hide their prejudice under the pretense of caring for the rights of the Palestinians, even when they openly express hatred for Muslims other occasions. I'm shocked to hear the same tone coming from a Jewish person.

Plus, what right does a foreigner have to talk about another nations this way, when the murder and persecution of LGBT people is present in their own country as well? I'm not saying that Russia doesn't have very big problems it needs to address. But using expressions like "it's a horrible place" and "Russians don't give a flip" is awful, as is comparing Russia to America and implying that America has a superior culture.

"They're obsessed with being Russians" is especially funny, because it's the exact same thing my friend said about Americans, when she came back from her trip to the US, where she was attacked by two different people for not singing the US anthem at a baseball match. Americans should really get off their high horse and sort the mess on their own backyard before comparing themselves to a dictatorship with no freedom of speech and declaring themselves culturally superior to it.

One more thing: I'm surprised by your shock and horror at the fact that there's no public outcry against the violation of the rights of minorities in Russia. You're a person from a country where the majority doesn't have to fear for their own rights and can therefore fight for the rights of the minority without risking anything. It's a luxury that majorities in countries where their rights are systematically violated can't really be expected to afford.

Should an average Russian actively persecute minorities? No.

But is it his moral obligation to protest against such persecution, when he knows that such a protest will likely end up with him getting arrested or even murdered? I don't think it's our place to judge that.

You aren't even Russian. Have you ever been to Russia? Because half my family was born and raised there for generations. "Russian" isn't actually a race, either, so saying I'm racist is extremely amusing. Do you know what that word even means?

Half of my family was born and raised for generations as a minority in Belarus, but it doesn't matter in the slightest because I wasn't and I know very little about the country. But I still know enough to know what its dominant religion is. The fact that you don't know that about Russia speaks volumes about your shallow, second-hand knowledge about the country.

In my language the word racist means ethnic prejudice. I don't believe the word "ethnicist" exists in the English language, which doesn't mean that ethnic prejudice doesn't either.

Russia isn't America, where a heterosexual can go on a anti-DADT rally and then come back home feeling secure and not having to fear that police will bang on their door the following day. And antisemites don't go around criticizing the government or culture of the nation of Jewishness (because there isn't one), they actively hate people just because they are Jewish and for no other reason.

You do know it's possible to care about more than one thing at a time, right? Also, this American will be the first to tell you our culture is FAR from perfect. This is really not about playing the "who is better" game. It's about taking a stand against a specific atrocity: a disgusting human rights violation that is taking place in a country that happens to be Russia, and the tacit/active (I'm not sure to what degree it is either) support of the government in said violation.

So if you're trying to turn this into an argument about racism and national superiority or lack thereof...you're really missing the point, I think.

I compared it to antisemitism because antisemitism hits close to home for me. And yes, many antisemites believe that Jewishness is a nation and all Jews collectively approve of every bad thing that happens in Israel. Anon did say that their family is Jewish. They also frequently compared Russia to America in the way that made it sound that they consider American culture to be better and immune to propaganda.

My problem isn't with you or with the Americans, but with that anon, who acts like they're an expert on Russia, despite lacking knowledge about the most basic facts about the country and damning the whole nation and its culture for something that America is also guilty of.

You can't whiteknight Russia when the government, itself, has made homosexuality an offence that you can arrested for. Yes, there is gay bashing in other countries like in the US but how many have laws built around gay bashing?

The government is undemocratic. You can't blame the Russian society for that.

Oh, I don't think the entire population is anything, but even though the news we get here is watered down and mostly useless, I haven't seen any real public outcry, either. It's just depressing that Putin's doing this and it seems like no one is opposing him.

If they are, i wish *that* would get reported. All i'm seeing is 'LGBT people/families are trying to escape, here's how to get asylum'.

It may have something to do with the fact that Russia lacks freedom of speech.
