Secrets like this and the fan-nerding goig on in the comments plus all the lovely fanart always makes me want to read the Silmarillion but I'm incredibly bad at remebering names, so I would probably already be completely lost after the first 50 pages...

Fan-nerding is the best part about this book *is one of said fan-nerds from the above comments* If you want to read the book, go ahead and do it!! What I always say to people is that it's honestly a lot scarier and more intimidating thinking about reading the Silmarillion than actually doing so -- get yourself a decent family tree of the main characters (something like this awesome thing (http://eilian.deviantart.com/art/Simplified-family-tree-silm-259668553) …or this one if you’re really ambitious (http://eilian.deviantart.com/art/Peoples-of-Tolkien-Ver-1-0-2-263759426) ) while you read and give it a couple of chapters. If the story grabs you, you’ll wonder what you were ever worried about in the first place.

You don't have to remember all the names. I'm unashamedly Elves-biased, so I just naturally end up remembering the names of my faves. I can't name more than 5 members of the Houses of Men.

Noo... well, you'd be lost, but otherwise what's the point of reading the Silm? Everyone gets lost, I think, and that's why the books comes with a nifty index of names/places/objects etc. and family trees. Besides, I think being in the fandom helps, since you quickly end up associating names with fanart/fics. Plus, yeah, like the nonnie above said, you certainly don't need to remember all the names.

You guys have me eyeing some of the several Silm options now. Choices, choices. Kindle, audiobook, physical copy... hmmmm.

Aha, lovely! (The only format I'd maybe be wary of is audiobook, what with the aforementioned name issue... but then again, I don't know, whatever works!) But anyway, yay!
