[The Silmarillion]

I love this art. I couldn't ever force myself to read this story, though. But wow, that is beautiful art!

I will be so disappointed if this thread doesn't turn into wank about your b!s.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? Sons of Fëanor wank or dogs wank?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
FandomSecrets does seem particularly susceptible to dog-related wank...

Dogs/animal abuse wank.

I'm disappointed too. I was going to comment on that part but it's already the next morning, and nobody talked about it =(

[Picture is a drawing of Celegorm and Huan from the book "The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien. Celegorm is an elf with long light hair, pale skin and pointy ears. He is wearing boots, pants, long-sleeved clothing and a tunic of indistinct coloring. Huan is a wolfhound/great hound/huge dog creature. He has pale fur, a sharp snout and is friendly licking at Celegorm's face. Celegorm is contentedly petting him on the back of his head.]

I want to be him. Never mind all the terrible things he did and the fact that, if you believe the Oath, he's stuck in the Everlasting Darkness (basically Elf Hell) for the rest of eternity.

To grow up in Valinor, with the amazing family and the gifts and the opportunities he had (dude could talk to animals! He was Best Friends Forever with a Valar!) ...Even if he threw it all away later on with a series of increasingly stupid and evil choices, I'd still swap places with him in a heartbeat.

Bonus secret: I will never forgive Huan for turning against him. Even if your master is a terrible person, a dog should be loyal. Bad dog!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Huan! ...is it bad that as I saw this I instantly recognised Huan (very cute fanart by the way!) and then proceeded to understand the secret as meaning 'I want to be Huan'? Which I did think that was a bit odd, but then again it's supposed to be a secret...

But, nah, good dog. By that time, rapey cousin-murdering Celegorm can stay on his own or maybe just with his equally nasty brother.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not see your reasoning at all. Celegorm is probably below median morality among the sons of Feanor, and everything he had he threw away.

I think it would make much more sense to want to switch places with some SENSIBLE elf who grew up in Valinor, could talk to animals, etc. and DIDN'T join in on the Dumb Stunts of the Noldor.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why should you judge Huan by canine standards? He was a higher form of intelligence than even his "master".

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's true if you look at all the Elves, Celegorm surely had the most interesting childhood and past life growing up in Valinor. To fall as far as he did certainly was no simply matter; I do like fics that seriously explore that aspect of the character. I have such a weird soft spot for him and his brother Caranthir, another one of those "bad" Feanorians.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)

Recs, please? I'm not usually the biggest Celegorm fan, to say the least, but then again, if there's interesting fic out there...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever read Deborah Judge? I consider her one of the best "old school" Silm writers (writing circa the early 2000s), and for some reason I'm just not as fond of the newer wave of fan authors, though many of them write about characters I like. She has two Celegorm-centric stories that slayed me on reading: The Guardians of the Walls (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/848536/1/The-Guardian-of-the-Walls) and Dispossed (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/854402/1/Dispossessed).

Both stories concern "the failed romance of Aredhel and Celegorm", so have caution if that's not your thing. The sequel is more interesting, as it features a dialogue between Celegorm and the captive Luthien.

There are other fics I've also liked but none I find quite as haunting as this portrayal.

Thank you! I do remember Deborah Judge's fics (especially 'As Little Might Be Thought') so I'll try these.

I just think it's interesting that has has all these traditional markers that would automatically denote 'hero' in any other story:

- Talks to animals and birds
- Has a magical dog companion who goes with him into exile
- Has a fairy godmother (okay, I'm stretching that one a bit but OROME)
- Has a canonical nickname of 'The Fair'

...I mean, basically he's a Disney Princess turned villain. How is that not kind of awesome?

(And yes, Caranthir is fascinating too and I don't know why more people in fandom don't pay attention to him. It's because he's not as pretty as Celegorm and Maedhros, I bet)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, but Maedhros is my fav... ahem, I agree with you about Celegorm, and what I find particularly fascinating is that in Valinor, he was the odd one out in terms of lifestyle, as a Noldor in general and Feanorian in particular. When his family would pay respect at the House of Aule, Celegorm went instead to the House of Orome (what happened there, hmm?). I mean, the twins were characterized as hunters too but none were quite so into it as Celegorm who talked to animals and must have been some of kind of wild child growing up (okay, personal headcanon there).

...and now I want to see the Sons of Feanor genderswapped, because what if Celegorm was an actual princess?

Caranthir has a bad rep, and rather undeserved, in my opinion. Sure he was known as "The Dark" and he had an awful temper, but did he kidnap any Doriathian princess? Did he ever instigate a political coup? He always struck me as one of those "No one ever stuck their neck out for me so I stick my neck out for no one, except my family because they're family" type. Needs more love, is all I'm saying. Have a weird fic: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2097874/1/Flint-And-Fire

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think Maedhros is everyone's fave particularly Fingon's but oh well and that's a really interesting point about how Celegorm really doesn't fit in with the rest of the Feanorian profile (and I always wondered what Feanor would have made of him in general: oldest son is the perfect diplomat and heir, second son is a musical genius, fourth son obviously has a head for figures and accounting, fifth son is just like daddy AND THEREFORE PERFECT and the twins are still little and it's too early to classify them in any way... that just leaves third son who likes running around outside and rolling in the mud with dogs. Hmm.)

Silm/Feanorian genderswaps aren't all that uncommon on Tumblr if you are to look, and I can remember at least one girl!Celegorm fic where she marries Eol of all people...

Honestly I think Caranthir gets a bad rap for his temper, at that (at least his mother-name only references that he's got a ruddy complexion, poor guy: Celegorm's specifically comments on how he jumps to his feet whenever he gets angry: Celegorm = Tyelkormo = Hasty Riser) and he's the one who forges (ha ha) a decent enough trading relationship with the dwarves that he becomes Beleriand's default taxman and gets filthy stinking rich off the proceeds: he must have been able to keep enough of a lid on his temper that none of them ever took insult and decided to make him shorter by a head (oops Thingol you could've learned a thing or two there couldn't you?)

DA
That's how I feel about Caranthir as well. Gets a bad rep because his name starts with a C and he's between the other two... plus the bad temper, prejudice and all the massacres... but still, in terms of actual deeds, and compared to the rest of them, he's far from the utter moral rottenness that Celegorm and Curufin reach (OP's never forgiving Huan for leaving Celegorm, but I'm never forgiving them for what they did to Finrod.)

Secrets like this and the fan-nerding goig on in the comments plus all the lovely fanart always makes me want to read the Silmarillion but I'm incredibly bad at remebering names, so I would probably already be completely lost after the first 50 pages...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Fan-nerding is the best part about this book *is one of said fan-nerds from the above comments* If you want to read the book, go ahead and do it!! What I always say to people is that it's honestly a lot scarier and more intimidating thinking about reading the Silmarillion than actually doing so -- get yourself a decent family tree of the main characters (something like this awesome thing (http://eilian.deviantart.com/art/Simplified-family-tree-silm-259668553) …or this one if you’re really ambitious (http://eilian.deviantart.com/art/Peoples-of-Tolkien-Ver-1-0-2-263759426) ) while you read and give it a couple of chapters. If the story grabs you, you’ll wonder what you were ever worried about in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to remember all the names. I'm unashamedly Elves-biased, so I just naturally end up remembering the names of my faves. I can't name more than 5 members of the Houses of Men.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Noo... well, you'd be lost, but otherwise what's the point of reading the Silm? Everyone gets lost, I think, and that's why the books comes with a nifty index of names/places/objects etc. and family trees. Besides, I think being in the fandom helps, since you quickly end up associating names with fanart/fics. Plus, yeah, like the nonnie above said, you certainly don't need to remember all the names.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You guys have me eyeing some of the several Silm options now. Choices, choices. Kindle, audiobook, physical copy... hmmmm.
