I am curious as to why. Have you played the other games?

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay. KH1 and KH2 were the best of the series so far, everything else is just far too convoluted (also Chains of Memories, which hold so much promise story-wise, suffered from a clunky card battle emulation system). Just enjoy what's available and maybe keep an open mind for KH3.

yeah i didn't really like the sequels that much. bbs had shit characters and 358/2 was 70% fanservice 30% retcon. dream drop distance is good though because you can get a t-rex and the plot of the series becomes hilariously incomprehensible

Hey they tried with the plot, THEY REALLY TRIED. lol. It's the best when they give you these 5 page long journals trying to explain the other games and put it all together. I think I wiki'd everything and I still didn't know what was going on (and oh, I played all the games too.)

Dream Drop Distance was still such a good game, I was really hesitant about it but it was so fun and it got me pumped for KH3

if i only had the journals to go off i would've been 1000% completely lost whereas now i am just mostly lost. they... they tried it. but yes ddd was still fun and i hope kh3 comes out before i retire

That is pretty accurately why I love Dream Drop Distance. Cute attack monsters and a plot of asspull that actually acknowledges its ridiculousness and keeps trucking surfing along anyway.

it was kind of like pokemon except with 8 million xehanorts

Most fans I know feel this way, me included. I and II were fun, but after that everything got too crazy. Plus, the constantly switching platforms didn't help. But really I just miss the Disney.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
amen to that. it felt like the later games (particularly dream drop distance) were trying to make a kingdom hearts game without actually making a kingdom hearts game....if that makes any sense. as though they were forced to include the disney stuff. and that really bothered me. because i loved the disney stuff and the organization/final fantasy/etc. stuff can gtfo a far as i'm concerned. :/

Agreed. I won't touch anything past the second game because no. I will however gladly read the messy summaries.

[Picture is a close-up of the head of Kairi from the videogame series "Kingdom Hearts". She is a young teenager with pale skin, blue eyes and short layered red hair framing her face and covering part of her forehead a little past her eyes. She is wearing a purple, black and white top and a black tight necklace.]

I don't care about any Kingdom Hearts game beyond Kingdom Hearts 2.

KH I & II are by far my favorites of the series and the only ones I've been able to play all the way through so I totally understand where you're coming from. I do wonder why you won't give the others a chance and I'd say to keep an open mind because KH III seems to be going back to the better way of playing. I think it's the handheld games that really drag the series down.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
If you disliked all of the handhelds, KHIII might not be for you, in terms of gameplay or story. It's picking up right after the 3DS one for plot, and it's not being made by the original team--the Osaka team's handling it.

I think that's a good thing, but people who didn't like BBS or 3D may have a hard time, since they were the devs for both in various degrees.

(That said, I'm not sure what you thought dragged the games down, so I figured it'd be a fair warning to mention both aspects.)

You and half the fandom?

Though Birth by Sleep is good and OMG I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT FOR KHIII.

the only game I refuse to believe exists is 358/2 Days. and yes, it's because of Xion. I felt she was wholly unnecessary to entire convoluted plot and really added nothing to Sora nor Kairi in the long run.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Quite honestly, I don't really like any of them past the first one, except for specific elements and such which I've cherry picked out of the later games. KHII I beat primarily because it was a button masher.

With that being said I hear we're finally getting Final Mix on this side of the Other Really Big Pond. Thank God.

I kind of feel you. From what I hear the storyline got stupidly complex to the point of stumping people, and the games just keep coming.

I hated Chains' game-play, same for Days (I hated that one enough I never finished it. Also...the storyline was getting kind of wacky, even for Kingdom Hearts). After that...well, I just haven't bothered. I have a PSP (though I'm not fond of it) so I could buy Birth by Sleep, but I own no 3DS and probably never will. A person shouldn't have to buy that many different handhelds/consoles to keep up with a franchise.

That said, I'll probably watch some let's plays before KH3 to catch me up on the story, because I still want to see where the series goes even if I get more confused every time I hear something about it. The interest is there (if lessened since I first got into the series), and part of that is due to being able to play on a home console again.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
The first and second ones will always, always be closest to my heart. I've enjoyed the few others I've played (admittedly not many because I can't afford to buy 50 different consoles AND the games -_-) but this will forever be THE story, to me. Always always always.

UGH I LOVE KINGDOM HEARTS T_T

Personally, I don't even love KH2 like I loved KH1. And I'm talking about both game mechanics as well as story.

I have to agree, now that I read your post. At first for me I only took the story into account but there were aspects of the mechanics that I did not enjoy.

Yay. While there were some cool additions (I liked the different forms but even they were a bit annoying in the grinding required to properly level them up), my mind immediately goes to all the stuff they took out/changed for the worse.

The trinity marks that were fun to look for, overuse of the triangle button mashing during boss fights vs new mechanics/techniques to actually master, WHERE'S MY ARS ARCANUM, gummi ship stuff was totally revamped (although I will admit I was probably one of the select few who preferred the older gummi ship stuff), maps were larger but somehow also emptier...

Of all these triangle button mashing to beat every boss was my biggest tick.

ETA: Oh, and Aeroga. They removed Aeroga and all its related spells. Probably because it was a bit of a game breaker, but it was an amazing game breaker.

Yeah, I liked the forms but leveling them made me like them less. I actually remember only using each one once for funsies and then not bothering with them until I realized I was at the end of the game and should level them up.

Omg trinity marks. They were cute.

I felt conflicted on the triangle. It did some cool things but 1) I felt like all I was doing was pushing that button during battle and 2) They demoted the dodge roll to it and you only got that one on very rare occasions. And, yeah, it made boss battles far too easy. Also yes on Ars Arcanum. I missed Aeroga and its line too. Honestly I feel like they could have integrated it if they tried. They just didn't try. It's easier to remove something than rework it. Plus people would have probably complained that it was different. I wish it was still there though.

I... kind of have to agree with you? I didn't like the gummi ship stuff either way but in KHII it forces you to have to be good at it. In KH I went the whole thing with my shitty little default ship and the space flight was just a cute distraction I didn't mind. It seemed like in KHII they wanted to force you into using the creating badass ships thing and I wasn't into it. The fact that I failed to get to the next world with my default ship made me frustrated. Why were they forcing this minigame on me? I didn't want the damn minigame!

The maps this threw me too. In some places it was okay but in others it really got to me. For example, in Agrabah in the first game it was eerily empty except for one dude who looked like Wakka. It wasn't that bad because I didn't see much of the city. But in KHII you see much more of the city and if I remember correctly, even less people. It's freaky. On top of that, when they had smaller areas they tended to put little nooks and crannies I liked exploring and figuring out. Like, you could make the flowers bloom in Deep Jungle by hitting them with lightning or you could change the clocks by hitting them. They had these things in KHII but by the time I got to them I had passed a place that looked just like the other place and it made it less interesting. There are only so many times I can walk past something that's supposed to be a "new" area.

Now I'm sad.

I fell off the wagon after II as well. I'm really into storytelling and II kind of wasn't as good for me. So I waited on the other ones and all I heard was fans complaining about Nomura's storytelling technique. So I didn't bother picking them up.

Same.
