"Write it yourself" is a really annoying response because not all readers are writers, and sometimes you're just in the mood to read a fic and don't have the time and energy for writing. Also, sometimes it just doesn't work. I started writing Sherlock fic because I wanted to read something very specific and couldn't find anything, but the fics I ended up writing were not what I had in mind when first visiting AO3.
