As stereotypical and snobbish as it sounds, the books are far far better, that they have an interesting take on the classical gods in a modern settinng [and, actually, iirc, Ares actually comes off worse than Hades...but in a way that fits what's actually in the myths.] I think the author also uses the classical myths as a whole, in some interesting ways that shows he actually *does* know the myths.
