Percy Jackson

[personal profile] leisuretime 2013-07-31 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
With all the people I like in the new Percy Jackson movie and a trailer that actually looks pretty good, I thought I'd give the first movie a try. What a waste of two hours.

It was SO predictable, a lot of the acting was awful, and some of the writing felt like it was just trying to regurgitate some social justice buzzwords for the sake of pretending like it educates the public rather than telling a good story.

Seriously, being told that Hades is abusive (shocker, that one) felt to me like one of those 50 Shades excerpts that was going around when those books were all the rage and the protag was like "Intellectually, I can rationalize blah blah big words blah blah pseudo-academic blah blah." It's all just bad writing.

If I liked this movie, I thought I might see the sequel in the theaters. Now, I think I'll be waiting until it's at Redbox. And I have a free promo code.

I have no idea what the general thought surrounding this, and have no desire to go looking up the fandom, so fill me in, Fandom Secrets: What's the deal with Percy Jackson?

I like it because I love Logan Lerman /shallow

Honestly, the only thing I can think of is that it's a children's series and not everything is Harry Potter.

the books are good, the movie was shit, the second one...looks better, but not leagues so. That's it.

You didn't know it was based of a book series? The book series is really good for its genre, especially the newer Olympian series. The movie was a HORRIBLE take on the books. They changed/left out A LOT of things, especially Grover's personality/Kronos.

The sequel looks like it's going back to the book roots, which is great. They sort of shoved in some of the stuff that happened in the first book, though. I'm really excited to see it. I was really happy to see Clarisse/Talia/Tyson in the trailer.

Yes, I knew it was based on books. I've just never read them, and was just trying to get a feel for the general thoughts on the movie.

The movie is bad. Grover in the books isn't wisecracking or a flirt, he actually has a girlfriend. I cringed when I saw it, because in the books he's not African American. They essentially made Grover into a black movie stereotype.

They left out Kronos, and that Luke is working for him. They also left out Ares and Percy's duel with him, so it...really is going to be awkward to just have Kronos mentioned now.

I actually really liked Grover. I can see where it might be annoying for book fans if he got a personality transplant, but I found Percy kind of dull in the movie and appreciated the levity Grover brought.

Just glancing over the IMDB for the sequel, it looks like it's probably going to go into a lot of the depth you found this one to be missing -- and clearly the movie folk don't care if they diverge from the books.

I think, in one respect, Lightning Thief succeeded in introducing us to the world without creating an overwhelming experience. It just also didn't create a very good experience.

I just hope they have him bring up his search for Pan/The Wild. It's a big part of Grover's character, especially since he becomes the new Pan at the end of the first series. He also has an empathy link with Percy that comes into play in SoM. I don't remember if it was mentioned in the first movie or not. You may have also noticed Annabeth is now a blonde, which is also a part of her character that really shouldn't have been left out of the first movie IMO. (She's not taken seriously because of it, despite being very smart/skilled at her interests)

Percy is a lot more likeable in the books. I don't know how they're going to do his relationship with his little brother Tyson in the movie (He's the Cyclops kid from the trailer), but it's sweet in the books.

Do you enjoy spoiling things for people?

The books have been out for years, and if they haven't read them by now, they probably never will!

Yeah, because interest in a movie NEVER prods people towards its source material.

Yes, I knew it was based on books. I've just never read them, and was just trying to get a feel for the general thoughts on the movie.

And she didn't like the movie. So, oh, wait-you're that anon that keeps trying to start troll/wank posts and then replies to herself/himself, aren't you? lol

As stereotypical and snobbish as it sounds, the books are far far better, that they have an interesting take on the classical gods in a modern settinng [and, actually, iirc, Ares actually comes off worse than Hades...but in a way that fits what's actually in the myths.] I think the author also uses the classical myths as a whole, in some interesting ways that shows he actually *does* know the myths.

.../coughs So yes. The movie was shit, and the books are actually pretty good.

I didn't finish the movie. I fell asleep during it and have never had the urge to see what I missed.

Supposedly, the books are way better, but I've never read them.

They are. Riordan makes good use of the Greek myths, and even Roman ones in the newer series. The characters are a lot more interesting, too. Aside from maybe Jason Grace.

Honestly, I like Jason a lot better than Percy in this series then again, I think most of the major characters from the original aren't being written all that well this time around, but I really like how they're integrating the two myths.

Re: Percy Jackson

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Jason came off a little too perfect for me, and didn't really stick out much. He's kind of the opposite of Leo. I like Jason a lot more than Frank in Mark of Athena, though. For some reason he bugged me in that one.

I do like Leo a lot more, I guess I was just distracted by the old characters a little too much to notice? Though I can see where you're coming from.

There is one little detail about Leo's back story that always bugged me - but probably only because I'm from the place he's supposed to be from, so it sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Maybe! Percy going on about Hazel's horse's swearing bugged me, too. Seemed weird for a sixteen (or is he seventeen now?) year old kid to care.

Re: Percy Jackson

[personal profile] ecoerrante 2013-08-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that *was* a little weird. I mean, I could understand it if he were sheltered/raised in an environment where that was really, really frowned on but...yeah, no.

I did think it was really sweet how Nico kept in touch with his half-sister[? I was never very clear exactly how related they were since one was roman, the other greek], and I did really like the 'look' into how the Aphrodite cabin was working...even if it did make Piper seem a little too...Not perfect exactly, but something was off with the scene.

Re: Percy Jackson

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Piper is also kind of bland sometimes. I think Hazel and Nico are considered half-siblings because the Roman/Greek gods are different sides of the same coin, or something like that. I have this strange feeling that Hazel is going to die again, though. Especially since Frank is pretty much going to die soon, too.
