Speaking of HP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Someone needs to write a fic about the British wizarding family that emigrates rather than let their child go to Slytherin. If it's leave the country or send your impressionable eleven-year-old to Racist Asshole Training Camp...

...But Slytherin *isn't* that? And there are a lot of wizards who are slytherin that actually side against the deatheaters? [Albeit, badly handled in the book, as the author admits.]

The author says that, but there's no textual evidence for it.

Slughorn. He may be an asshole, but he's not racist.

Didn't he say that Lily was very gifted for a Muggle-born or something like that?

It's because the books are from a Gryffindor perspective and the rivalry made it hard to form friendships between those houses. I don't think anyone outright said that all Slytherins were prejudiced. It still would've been nice to see some Slytherins in the DA though. We at least know of Andromeda, but she wasn't in their era so...

I always wondered why more wizards didn't just skip town when the war got worse. Would it have been effective to apparate in Peru and forget about those racists assholes?

This is one of those times when the golden rule of talking about Harry Potter comes into play: "Nothing in Harry Potter ultimately makes any sense, and it's better not to worry about it"

Re: Speaking of HP

True that. But still. Dean Thomas and his dad (was it them? I can't remember) decided to putz around the forest instead of leaving for China, and it's like c'moooon.

I never really understood how big a threat Voldemort was to the outside world, either. Like, how pervasive is the stigma against mudbloods? Is it just a British thing?

Stuff to ponder late at night

Depends.

Left unchecked, pretty damn serious. Tornados and earthquakes and people disappearing and shit.

If, however, wizard's came forth and revealed who they were to the rest of the world, nil. The wizarding world as a separate detached entity would effectively be gone, but I'm gonna bet Tom getting riddled with a fuckload of sniper bullets with the rest of his death eaters once somebody cast some spells that let normal soldiers see the assholes (or gave them magical items to the same effect) would end his threat pretty damn fast.

I don't think it's Racist Asshole Training Camp. It's pervasively classist, and pervasively at least somewhat racist, but I think usually more in a background, cultural way, not that everyone coming out of it is actually going to be a Death Eater. And those views, while we may disagree with them, and the Gryffindors may disagree with them, don't seem to be at all out of the mainstream in the world of Harry Potter. They are depressingly commonplace, just as they are in our world.

I think ultimately Slytherin is less close to the Hitler Youth and a lot closer to, like, Eton, or something like that - extremely privileged, and prone to inculcating classism and all that sort of thing - but you don't see people fleeing the country rather than sending their kids to Eton. (And I'm not saying that Eton and Slytherin are identical - I just think it's another point of comparison for Slytherin to get another look at what it might actually be like, another perspective)

Of course, you don't have to flee the country to avoid sending your kid to Eton, you can send your kid to some other school. Hogwarts is the only academic option in Britain.

Re: Speaking of HP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you can be in one of the other houses.

But I take your point.

Re: Speaking of HP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
True, but you can apparently still send your kid to other schools without leaving the country - according to Draco, anyway, who admittedly isn't a reliable source, but he does say in GoF (I think) that his parents had considered sending him to Durmstrang. (Of course he was also an Evil Fanboy, so it might have been a lie or exaggerated. Who knows.)

Re: Speaking of HP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but there was really no reason for him to lie about that, iirc?

Hmmm, very good point. Must think about that.

Special children should know that they are.

I'd rather write a fic about people who actually are proud of being in the best school and are the best wizards.

Also, this scenario would never happen. By the time a kid is in Slytherin, he's already in the school, remember? Which means he or she's exactly the sort who'd want to be there anyway. What are they going to do, take him out of school just after he starts making friends and such?
