Re: Speaking of HP

I don't think it's Racist Asshole Training Camp. It's pervasively classist, and pervasively at least somewhat racist, but I think usually more in a background, cultural way, not that everyone coming out of it is actually going to be a Death Eater. And those views, while we may disagree with them, and the Gryffindors may disagree with them, don't seem to be at all out of the mainstream in the world of Harry Potter. They are depressingly commonplace, just as they are in our world.

I think ultimately Slytherin is less close to the Hitler Youth and a lot closer to, like, Eton, or something like that - extremely privileged, and prone to inculcating classism and all that sort of thing - but you don't see people fleeing the country rather than sending their kids to Eton. (And I'm not saying that Eton and Slytherin are identical - I just think it's another point of comparison for Slytherin to get another look at what it might actually be like, another perspective)

Of course, you don't have to flee the country to avoid sending your kid to Eton, you can send your kid to some other school. Hogwarts is the only academic option in Britain.

Well, you can be in one of the other houses.

But I take your point.

True, but you can apparently still send your kid to other schools without leaving the country - according to Draco, anyway, who admittedly isn't a reliable source, but he does say in GoF (I think) that his parents had considered sending him to Durmstrang. (Of course he was also an Evil Fanboy, so it might have been a lie or exaggerated. Who knows.)

Yeah, but there was really no reason for him to lie about that, iirc?

Hmmm, very good point. Must think about that.
