see what you want, but donating an equal amount of money to gay rights organizations does nothing to take money away from those who would oppress us. People like Card, who hopes that gay people will now not oppress HIM now that gay marriage is legal in a few countries and US states, don't deserve a dime.

if you really want to see it on the big screen, why not buy a ticket for something else and duck into Ender's Game instead?

If OP lives in a country where homosexuality is illegal, that may not be as easy to get away with.

And the point isn't about money, it's that OP wants to be excited for something and feels he or she can't because they're reminded of the creator's biases.

Yeah, you're doing that. Card's politics have nothing to do with a person's enjoyment of his works.

A plumber's job is to fix my pipes, not agree with my politics. I can't not call the plumber if the sink's overflowing. I can tell him to shut his mouth, but Op doesn't have that option with Card.

It's not OP's fault Card's a homophobe. I'd rather OP get to have something they enjoy than Card be deprived the royalties of a single ticket.

It's not just that Card is a homophobe, it's that he works very very hard to further his agenda against 'sinners' with such tactics as paying off African American religious leaders to speak out against homosexuality.

If the plumber comes in and says "The minute I get your check, I'm going to the shelter, purchasing a puppy with the money, and drowning it for fun." Can you smile and go "hey, not my business what you do with the money!" with a clear conscious? Go out and write a second check to the Humane Society to alleviate the guilt? Or do you go "Get the hell out of my house and I'm telling everyone I know what you plan to do with your money!"?

He's the producer, and he's getting a good chunk of the ticket sales, and my money would be going directly to him campaigning to keep being gay illegal where the OP is, and working against human rights in America.

His book may not be evil, but he is.

I'm not a fan of the books, and I have no idea what Card actually does. If that's true, then he is a horrible human being.

But it's not OP's fault. Card's actions are his alone, and he bears the blame. Yes, it would be nice to be able to say, "Thanks for the work but fuck you for your politics," but it's not really possible in this case. OP is doing what they feel they personally and legally can by offsetting the ticket with a donation, because the story means that much to them. It's not OP's resposibility what Card does with the money he's given.

The RIAA treats customers like criminals, to put it lightly, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop purchasing music. Music is too important to me, and you can't find a substitute for that one song. I'm going to speak against their actions, but I can't function without music. If OP needs Ender's Game, let them have it.

I don't disagree exactly, but your analogy doesn't really fit. If your sink is overflowing, you need a plumber, but you don't need a puppy murdering plumber. Likewise, the OP doesn't have to monetarily support Card's project. They can choose not to.

Now mind you, I'm not trying to dictate their choice one way or another, but presenting the situation as if there's no choice at all ("it's not really possible in this case") just weakens the argument. The real issue is that the OP should be able to see this movie because they want to, and only they can decide if it's worth it to them despite Card's homophobia and awful politics.

Except your own extension of that analogy doesn't fit here. There's no other author of these books that OP likes. The source of the movie belongs to one person; so while you probably could find a plumber who won't drown puppies, you're not going to find an OSC who isn't a homophobe.

...And since I feel like that didn't completely make sense, here's the actual end of that thought: The OP already enjoys Ender's Game and related stuff for entertainment, and it's not fair to them to say "Don't see this thing you really want to see because the creator is a terrible person." They can't choose who creates what they like.
