see what you want, but donating an equal amount of money to gay rights organizations does nothing to take money away from those who would oppress us. People like Card, who hopes that gay people will now not oppress HIM now that gay marriage is legal in a few countries and US states, don't deserve a dime.

if you really want to see it on the big screen, why not buy a ticket for something else and duck into Ender's Game instead?

OP, I could have written this secret. I'm American, so I don't have to worry about being jailed for being gay, but everything else is me. Ender's Game is my favorite book and I read it long before I knew about OSC's homophobia.

I'm also planning on seeing the movie and donating to a LGBT organization to balance it out. I refuse to let anyone make me feel bad for wanting to see this novel on the big screen after I've waited years for it to happen. And you shouldn't either.

[Picture is actress Hailee Steinfeld and Asa Butterfield playing Petra Arkanian and Andrew "Ender" Wiggin in the upcoming film "Ender's Game". Petra is a teenager with rosy pale skin and long brown hair pulled into a bun behind her head. Andrew Wiggin is a teenager a bit younger than her with rosy pale skin and dark hair cut short. They are both wearing what looks like military-type dark gray jumpsuits. They are in a dining hall, sitting across each other at a table with other young people and talking together.]

I'm gay, and living in a country where I can be jailed for it.

Ender's Game was one of my favourite childhood books. I loved and related to its message about being compassionate to people/aliens you don't understand because they're different, instead of hating and demonising them. I've been looking forward to watching the movie in the cinema since the time I first read it.

I know about Orson Scott Card's homophobia. It hurts, to put it mildly, but I scroll past and avoid reading where possible, because I don't want the memories tainted. But it's becoming harder to avoid, and I'm getting frustrated at well-meaning (especially straight) people telling me to boycott this movie and judging me for not wanting to do so. I don't have many good things in my life. This movie was supposed to be one of them, and it's becoming harder and harder to think of it with the same delight as when I first heard it was being made.

Just le me enjoy this, okay? I promise I'll make up for it. I doubled the cost of a ticket and donated it to an LGBT health organization*. I'll do more, just give me this one movie.

*not to brag, just to show I'm serious. I'm far from being rich (lol legalised job discrimination), but guilt triumphs monetary concerns.

I've come to the conclusion that it is inevitable that every fandom I enjoy will have SOMETHING about it which is problematic. Some things are worse than others, sure, and OSC is definitely one of the most infamous offenders, making enjoyment of anything he's ever written "problematic" just by virtue of how outspoken he's been about his homophobia and how he's never (to my knowledge) even slightly backed down or moderated his views about that.

But fuck it. I think that if something brings you happiness and is problematic, you just need to continue liking that thing and let it bring you happiness REGARDLESS. It's important not to gloss over or excuse the things OSC has said, but I don't feel like you need to feel obligated to constantly be railing against how awful he is either. Nor do you need to feel bad about wanting to see the movie and even spend your money to see it in the theater. Remember, he's hardly the only person involved in that production, and a lot of people who are NOT virulent homophobes are involved in its creation and are trying to do the best they can in bringing a beloved story to the screen while at the same time distancing themselves from the creator who has been a HUGE TOOL and really fucking offensive, too.

If anything, think of yourself as SPITING his homophobic ass. "Death of the author" IS a thing and you can take comfort in the fact that great art or stories don't have to lose value because of the failings of the persons who made them. So long as you are not going around chiding people who have made the decision to boycott, and so long as you are not taking it upon yourself to defend or mitigate what OSC has said in order to defend his works... I'd say you're fucking entitled to your fun. "Kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight" and all that shit. Try not to let yourself get too discouraged about this and maybe try to avoid the people/places who are being the most vocal about trying to convince others to boycott this film, and I think you'll be fine and can hold your head high.

You know what? Go and enjoy the movie. See it as many times you want. Because a) most of the money of your ticket will go to a lot of people who aren't OSC, and probably aren't homophobic, and b) it gives YOU a message of hope. So death of the author and all that, I hope the movie is everything you want it to be and more.

(Also, I hope that your country will join the twentyfirst century soon)

I know cam recordings are generally pretty low quality, but I suggest when they come out, download the hell out of them. If you want to go see it in theatres too (because nothing quite beats watching a movie on the big screen) go for it, but definitely download the fuck out of the movie. =P

Now wouldn't it be awesome if a lot of the other creators/actors who will be making money off of the film decided to donate money to equality organizations in response to the controversy? The book itself seems to have good messages and if the apple fell that far from the tree I'd just be able to laugh at OSC's probable dismay.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna be real honest here for a minute, not about OP because I think other people have handled that pretty well (enjoy what you enjoy For the Win!!), but about the whole hating OsC stuff.

I was raised in a gays-are-bad mindset. Like, they want to destroy marriage and hurt your children and shit.

You know what helped me find the way out of that mindset? Loving. Like, not people who get all social justice and hate-filled (and seriously, there's a LOT of that out there.) Yes, there are lots of frustrations and stuff, and people get angry, but it doesn't change anything. It just gives people an excuse to say, yes that's really what gay people are like.

Justin Lee was one of the big influences that helped me find the path to truth, and it was by his espousing not just study and learning but LOVE: http://gcnjustin.tumblr.com/ He's a gay Christian who emphasizes we need to LOVE each other (as christians in particular) whatever we believe or don't.

And that is what is missing from so many of the arguments and boycotts on both sides of stuff.

Hate changes nobody's mind, it just gives an excuse to continue thinking "Oh yeah they're like that."

There is a lot of hate on both 'sides.' But I am now grateful to be a Christian who believes in gay marriage and love being equal with heterosexual marriage and love in God's eyes and in mine. And I'm working towards making the world a better place in whatever tiny way I can. I even write gay romance now!

But it happened because of learning the truth, when it was finally my time--and THAT happened from love, not all the arguments and social justice and hatred in the world!

Peace.

Go see it! Don't feel bad! Just because the author's a dick about something doesn't mean the work itself is bad. (By the way, I haven't read any of this author's stuff, so I don't know if he writes his own stance into the books.)

OP, that is entirely your choice and no one else's business. You don't have to justify to anyone how you feel about this and why you would choose to see this movie.

If it makes you feel better and helps you have hope, then go see it. Sometimes the message of the work is bigger than the creator who unwittingly created it and the joke's on them.

I say this as someone who can't stand Card.

I'm in a similar situation--I loved the book enough as a teenager to go and read all those weird Speaker Of The Dead books afterward. But OSC's gone off the deepend. I'm hoping the dude just gets caught with another dude someday and gets forced out because, damn it, this level of homophobia is rare among the uncloseted. Most fundamentalists aren't so fixated.

Anyway: go to a big multiplex, buy another ticket and sneak in.

If you can't do that: torrent.

Fuck anyone who is trying to ruin your experience. Sometimes, you just have to say, "This effected me greatly when I was young, please don't ruin it for me." I had to say that to my friend when watching Narnia movies because, yeah, that's my childhood right there, and yeah, I want to watch it without any bitching. Hopefully, whoever is bothering you about it will understand or you can avoid places where people bitch about the movie.

And I'm excited to see it, too. "The enemy's gate is down!" Argh, such good stuff.
