I'm also planning on seeing the movie and donating to a LGBT organization to balance it out. I refuse to let anyone make me feel bad for wanting to see this novel on the big screen after I've waited years for it to happen. And you shouldn't either.

I'm gay, and living in a country where I can be jailed for it.
Ender's Game was one of my favourite childhood books. I loved and related to its message about being compassionate to people/aliens you don't understand because they're different, instead of hating and demonising them. I've been looking forward to watching the movie in the cinema since the time I first read it.
I know about Orson Scott Card's homophobia. It hurts, to put it mildly, but I scroll past and avoid reading where possible, because I don't want the memories tainted. But it's becoming harder to avoid, and I'm getting frustrated at well-meaning (especially straight) people telling me to boycott this movie and judging me for not wanting to do so. I don't have many good things in my life. This movie was supposed to be one of them, and it's becoming harder and harder to think of it with the same delight as when I first heard it was being made.
Just le me enjoy this, okay? I promise I'll make up for it. I doubled the cost of a ticket and donated it to an LGBT health organization*. I'll do more, just give me this one movie.
*not to brag, just to show I'm serious. I'm far from being rich (lol legalised job discrimination), but guilt triumphs monetary concerns.

But fuck it. I think that if something brings you happiness and is problematic, you just need to continue liking that thing and let it bring you happiness REGARDLESS. It's important not to gloss over or excuse the things OSC has said, but I don't feel like you need to feel obligated to constantly be railing against how awful he is either. Nor do you need to feel bad about wanting to see the movie and even spend your money to see it in the theater. Remember, he's hardly the only person involved in that production, and a lot of people who are NOT virulent homophobes are involved in its creation and are trying to do the best they can in bringing a beloved story to the screen while at the same time distancing themselves from the creator who has been a HUGE TOOL and really fucking offensive, too.
If anything, think of yourself as SPITING his homophobic ass. "Death of the author" IS a thing and you can take comfort in the fact that great art or stories don't have to lose value because of the failings of the persons who made them. So long as you are not going around chiding people who have made the decision to boycott, and so long as you are not taking it upon yourself to defend or mitigate what OSC has said in order to defend his works... I'd say you're fucking entitled to your fun. "Kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight" and all that shit. Try not to let yourself get too discouraged about this and maybe try to avoid the people/places who are being the most vocal about trying to convince others to boycott this film, and I think you'll be fine and can hold your head high.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)I was raised in a gays-are-bad mindset. Like, they want to destroy marriage and hurt your children and shit.
You know what helped me find the way out of that mindset? Loving. Like, not people who get all social justice and hate-filled (and seriously, there's a LOT of that out there.) Yes, there are lots of frustrations and stuff, and people get angry, but it doesn't change anything. It just gives people an excuse to say, yes that's really what gay people are like.
Justin Lee was one of the big influences that helped me find the path to truth, and it was by his espousing not just study and learning but LOVE: http://gcnjustin.tumblr.com/ He's a gay Christian who emphasizes we need to LOVE each other (as christians in particular) whatever we believe or don't.
And that is what is missing from so many of the arguments and boycotts on both sides of stuff.
Hate changes nobody's mind, it just gives an excuse to continue thinking "Oh yeah they're like that."
There is a lot of hate on both 'sides.' But I am now grateful to be a Christian who believes in gay marriage and love being equal with heterosexual marriage and love in God's eyes and in mine. And I'm working towards making the world a better place in whatever tiny way I can. I even write gay romance now!
But it happened because of learning the truth, when it was finally my time--and THAT happened from love, not all the arguments and social justice and hatred in the world!
Peace.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)Go see it! Don't feel bad! Just because the author's a dick about something doesn't mean the work itself is bad. (By the way, I haven't read any of this author's stuff, so I don't know if he writes his own stance into the books.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)If it makes you feel better and helps you have hope, then go see it. Sometimes the message of the work is bigger than the creator who unwittingly created it and the joke's on them.
I say this as someone who can't stand Card.
