Gonna be real honest here for a minute, not about OP because I think other people have handled that pretty well (enjoy what you enjoy For the Win!!), but about the whole hating OsC stuff.

I was raised in a gays-are-bad mindset. Like, they want to destroy marriage and hurt your children and shit.

You know what helped me find the way out of that mindset? Loving. Like, not people who get all social justice and hate-filled (and seriously, there's a LOT of that out there.) Yes, there are lots of frustrations and stuff, and people get angry, but it doesn't change anything. It just gives people an excuse to say, yes that's really what gay people are like.

Justin Lee was one of the big influences that helped me find the path to truth, and it was by his espousing not just study and learning but LOVE: http://gcnjustin.tumblr.com/ He's a gay Christian who emphasizes we need to LOVE each other (as christians in particular) whatever we believe or don't.

And that is what is missing from so many of the arguments and boycotts on both sides of stuff.

Hate changes nobody's mind, it just gives an excuse to continue thinking "Oh yeah they're like that."

There is a lot of hate on both 'sides.' But I am now grateful to be a Christian who believes in gay marriage and love being equal with heterosexual marriage and love in God's eyes and in mine. And I'm working towards making the world a better place in whatever tiny way I can. I even write gay romance now!

But it happened because of learning the truth, when it was finally my time--and THAT happened from love, not all the arguments and social justice and hatred in the world!

Peace.

I like you, 'Nonny, and I agree.

This.

Outrage can get you moving, but compassion and love lead you through better paths.

OP

omg I just started reading the blog you linked and I love it so far. Thank youuu. I'm also a Christian, albeit not on good terms with a lot of churches. >_>
I agree so much with what you say, especially with fighting oppression with love rather than hate, which simply fuels further hate.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh ffs, passivism.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not what this is. Try again.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
That really sucked for Ghandi, didn't it?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what this has to do with not boycotting. You say you're "making the world a better place in whatever tiny way you can" ... isn't boycotting a movie so the money won't be spent to hurt people the definition of doing a tiny thing to make the world better? Is it impossible to boycott out of love rather than hate?

Boycott or don't, but I don't understand what you're saying here.

It's not about hate. I don't know Card, and I probably will never meet him.

Why am I obligated to spend my limited entertainment dollars on his work, rather than the work of dozens of LGBT and gay-positive writers who are producing more than I can watch or read right now?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
When you start to think you are obligated to spend your money on someone's media just because they are 'something' you are disrespecting them and their work. Spend money because they are good and you enjoy their work.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
What, you think that we aren't going to enjoy the LGBT positive work?

For fucks sack, of course they're going to spend money on the stuff they like - there's just a lot of good stuff out there, which means you can be picky about *which* good things you spend money on.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-08-02 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not an obligation, it's a choice. Why spend my entertainment dollars on things I do not enjoy and do not support?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Honestly, I think they're responding more to how people are talking about Card [Look at all the 'DO IT TO SPITE HIM!' type crap people are saying], and the way people - albeit unintentionally - shaming the OP for paying to see this movie.

Also, no one is saying you shouldn't boycott if that's what you want to do. The OC never said you shouldn't. But by the same token, there's nothing saying someone obligated to *not* spend money on his work and spend it on LGTB/LGTB positive writers if they enjoy his work enough to be willing to pay for it.

And well...Speaking as lesbian who wants to see this movie [and lives in an area where job [and housing/etc] discrimination are legal]? You get a lot of shit, even hate, for admitting to that where I live. However, I've yet to hear of someplace/situation where the reverse is true. So please, can you not act like someone is doing that to you?

> Also, no one is saying you shouldn't boycott if that's what you want to do.

I was specifically responding to "love not hate" anon who appears to be framing the boycott as an act of hate that's unlikely to change his opinion.

> However, I've yet to hear of someplace/situation where the reverse is true. So please, can you not act like someone is doing that to you?

Well yes, I do get a fair bit of shit in larger segments of SF&F fandom for choosing to boycott and patronize feminist and LGBT-friendly SF&F authors (the latter because I just don't have the time to avoid specialization). I've been called hateful (in this thread) and anti-american for supporting boycotts, at least once by a SF&F author.

SA

And that's open to interpretation. I didn't read it that way at all, particularly given all the 'STICK IT TO THE [TOTES CLOSESTED] CARD!'

And I've been physically threatened for wanting to see it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-08-02 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Threatening you is a bad thing, and those doing it are assholes.
