I got super hungry yesterday and bought waffle fries from chik-fil-a so I'll be a terrible gay person with you if you want. though, honestly, hollywood is full of incredibly shitty people and we've all probably supported some of them in one way or another at some point. not saying people shouldn't boycott the movie but yeah...I've learned many times that researching favorite actors, musicians and authors can lead to terrible revelations

yeah I agree, the less you know about a creator the better off you are :\ it almost never leads to anything good.

In this case in particular, because I was interested in Ender's Game until I found out about all of this OSC stuff and now he is all I can think about when I think of the movie, so I doubt I'll be able to see it without my opinion being influenced by his stupidity.

This is my fundamental philosophy about fandom.

I've never recovered from finding out that Adam Baldwin is a dick

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Libertarian =/= dick

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
na

anon that...isn't why he's a dick. he's said some disappointing things regarding abortion and gay marriage in the past so I'm guessing that's what they're referring to

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Strong correlation though.

Noooo, Adam Baldwin. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
This. It's gotten to the point where I can't let myself research almost any entertainer because 99% of the time it turns out said entertainer treats others horribly. You like this guy's books? Well he's a huge homophobe! You like this artist's cartoons? Turns out he's a huge racist! You enjoy this actor? Hey, he used to beat his wife with a bat! Fan of this sports star? Guess what, he's a rapist!

Racists, misogynists, misanthropic assholes, bastards who think poor people are just lazy, blowhards who treat their staff like shit... Seriously, can we get a list of celebrities who arent' scum? It would genuinely make me happy.

Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman makes everything better.

Raised Scientologist, allegedly practiced well into the '80s, still may give money to the church.

Some people read "A Game of You" as transphobic.

... actually, that's about all I have. He really does seem lovely, especially if you decide Amanda Palmer does not count against him.

Well, okay, but I'd argue that A Game of You was written a very long while ago. I don't mean to say it as "it was a long time ago, the standards were different", more that Gaiman gives me the impression that he's matured a lot since then. (Which is another reason why I couldn't really see him as still supporting scientology, I get the vibe that he probably knows better. Of course I may very well be wrong, and if so I'd be pretty disappointed. I'm hoping I'm right.)

Also, I quite like Amanda Palmer, though I know that for some reason fandomsecrets hate her (no need to give me the reasons, I know why some people don't like her, I'm just puzzled at how much energy fandomsecrets puts into hating her). However whatever your personal opinion on her, I'd argue that judging someone for who they chose to marry isn't the same as judging someone because they actively put a lot of energy and money into oppressing people. Amanda Palmer may be a very grating and problematic figure, but, well, first, she's Amanda Palmer, she's not fused at the hip with Neil Gaiman, and second, she does give me the impression of being a generally well-meaning person. I couldn't see her putting money into actively oppressing people.

He still gives money to the church, and given that his parents and his ex-wife are big people on the church and still talk to him (well, his mom and ex-wife) it's impossible that he's not still inside.

If Gaiman wasn't a scientologist now, there's no way he could talk to his family.

Also Jennifer Lawrence.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope she never back tracks on the "I'll never starve myself for a role," comment, because a lot of actresses do that and it kind of makes me sad that they do it because they felt like they weren't getting roles because they were a size 4 instead of a size 2. =(

I hope so too. But given how successful she already is, I have faith in her - she's definitely shown that the stupid expectations of the Hollywood industry have nothing to do with talent or ability or attractiveness. I'm definitely hopeful.

Dunno if you'll count this as a celebrity, but Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, gets progressively more darling the more you learn about him. (You will be miserable about how he's been treated though.)

Actually, I have yet to find anything particularly offensive about the Doctors, though some of them straddle the line of letting others get away with badness in their presence.

Tom Baker went through a phase of being a bit of a tosser by all accounts, particularly to Louise Jamieson when she was first cast as Leela - but he definitely got better (he and Louise now get on very well) and in any case even when he was at his most jerk-like, he still always made time for child fans, so I can overlook that.
