THE SWITCHEROO

I'm in a similar situation--I loved the book enough as a teenager to go and read all those weird Speaker Of The Dead books afterward. But OSC's gone off the deepend. I'm hoping the dude just gets caught with another dude someday and gets forced out because, damn it, this level of homophobia is rare among the uncloseted. Most fundamentalists aren't so fixated.

Anyway: go to a big multiplex, buy another ticket and sneak in.

If you can't do that: torrent.

Dude you are an Actual Gay Person. Many, many people are going to boycott this movie. Your one ticket won't make that much difference, so don't feel guilty. Just don't encourage your friends to also buy tickets. The corresponding donation is actually a really good idea.

he's actually toned it down a little (possibly due to backlash from people protesting the movie, idk). he recently resigned from his position on the board of the National Organization of Marriage and admitted in a magazine article that he thinks protesting gay marriage is "moot" because he believes that it will be legal in all 50 states soon enough regardless of what anyone says. still a douche, but I think his doucheyness peaked a while ago and it's starting to very slowly level off

..and sneak in

For some reason, everytime someone suggests this I kept getting a vague feeling of 'you should be ashamed to watch this!'

Oh hell no. You shouldn't be ashamed of wanting to see Ender's Game. It's Ender's Game, not Orson Scott Card's Big Gayhatin' Jamboree. I plan on seeing it. I think avoiding certain media because we think it'll corrupt us somehow is dumb. You have to engage with these things.

But we shouldn't pay for it, because then a jerk would get money.

Nah. It's just a way to fuck with the system.

you are not fucking with the system by sneaking into a movie

but you are denying OSC the revenue from that ticket. which means that he has ever so much less money to spend spreading his homophobia - because that's the problem, it's not just an opinion he has that he doesn't do much with, he *actively* campaigns to oppress LGBT people.

Used to campaign. He's pretty much given up on it at this point.

The popular perception from those who've read all his froth-at-the-mouth writing on the topic AND the books he's written that acknowledge that teh gay is a thing is that OSC is bisexual and that's why he thinks that people should just ~choose~ to live straight lives with lots of babies. Unfortunately it seems like he's completely aware of this and not likely to get caught pants down over it.

DA

It honestly bothers me that people automatically assume "You have X opinion! You must be -insert orientation here-!'

Seriously people, opinions =/= orientation [sexual or otherwise].

It bothers me in general, but not in this particular instance because he's written down a lot of relatively personal comments on the topic.
