I think that's common in fandoms serious/intense/depressing series because we want the characters to have a break and be happy, even if it's just in our headcanons.

What's so depressing about the original Invader Zim cartoon?
Haven't seen it for years but wasn't it rather goofy and random most of the time?

Yeah, I don't really get it, either. I mean, some of the humor could be morbid, and it would take the occasional break from jokes and shift the focus to action and worldbuilding, but it was usually just kind of surreal and cartoonish.

I thought they were being facetious, because from my experience the IZ fandom is very fond of ridiculous amounts of angst for a show that was pretty silly, if dark-humored. That's how I parsed it, anyways. :S

Yep, this all the way. That's why the Silent Hill fandom is full of silly art and crackfics. We need a break from sobbing into our game controllers.
