I don't think that every example of slash shipping is fetishizing gay people. However, I do feel like it happens a decent amount. Especially when I see so many people who seem to only care about the m/m shipping because "it's so hot!" and never seem to care for any female characters. It seems much more like a lot of them are straight females getting sexual pleasure from imagining two guys than people who legitimately care about the characters as people. It seems to me like straight males watching lesbian scenes in porn. And that makes me uncomfortable. (Queer female here, so I can't really talk about the fetishizing of men, but that is how I feel regarding the sometimes/potential fetishizing of gay people. And, yes, it is obviously just my opinion.)

idk, it might just be the fandom corners I've always hung out in, but the shippers generally DO seem to care a lot-- an AWFUL lot-- about the characters as people. Shipping might be a major part of that or even the original reason why they started caring, but there's no shortage of strong feelings about the individual characters when it's a ship people are genuinely invested in.

Yeah, no. Shippers tend to be downright worshipful about the characters they ship and often dwell on their personalities far more than their physiques. I'd also note that in almost all cases it's not gay men being fetishised but straight men, and I don't think there's anything to feel uncomfortable about there.

Oh, yeah, sometimes it's really obvious. It's usually mostly silly, but sometimes it's creepy in a way that is really offensive.
