Honestly, I've seen people gush about it a lot but I have yet to see or hear one thing about it beyond the basic concepts that you see in about 75% of mecha anime.

Seriously; what does this film have beyond the basic idea? Does it have any unique spins on the concept? What does this film do that dozens of mecha animes have not? Seriously, give me SOMETHING.

(And don't say 'robots punching monsters'. Transformers 3 was 'robots punching robots' but that film still sucked.)

It doesn't do anything different or novel. It doesn't deconstruct anything or offer a new take on the genre, at all.

All it does is do exactly what giant robot things are supposed to do. All the things that made you love mecha anime in the first place. And it does it really really well, and more than that, it does it in a way that is filled with joy and love.

No, all of Tranformers is basically jagged pieces of metal rolling into each other loudly, and that's why it sucks. Pacific Rims is the first time on screen that somebody seems to get what people want to see when they say "giant fighting robots".

It's just a fun movie to watch with great music, great CGI, great world building, some well rounded characters (apparently, they didn't click with me), it's pretty artistic, looks quite nice in 3D and oh it was just sheer fun to watch.

That's why people are gushing about it. It's pure, unadulterated fun. It doesn't need to be original or special or oh so deep or have a fancy twist to be a good movie or to get people to like it. Not everything is about originality.

...and yeah the giant robots punching monsters was pretty goddamn awesome. Damn they executed all that SHEER SIZE so damn well...and the sounds. It was a nice adrenaline rush

Well, the entire concept of Drifting gives it an extra layer of complexity, if that's what you're looking for. Pilots can't Drift alone, so they have to be in sync with somebody, and it leads to interesting character dynamics and interesting consequences.

Also, you might like the "hero plotline" in general. The protagonist is never pushed to the front of the action because he's the hero; there are actually good reasons the main dude gets to be part of the action, and it's not because he's OMG SO AWESOME. (Which is different than most mecha anime in my experience.)
