OP

I'm biologically male, though I'm typically assumed female on the Internet. I could probably fake my way into a females-only group, but the concept of separating men from women revolves around the idea that men and women are and have to be certain things, and I refuse to help further that even passively with my participation.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
.... what? that's retarded.

Women-only groups are good because a lot of gaming communities are really toxic to women, it has nothing to do with gender roles.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If a gaming community's toxic, you can make a small group and ban anyone from it who causes problems, but I don't think gender's the right approach to it. If people don't even realize I'm male*, can you really say my maleness is the problem, or is it just that some people are being jerks?

* I don't identify as male, but it's what I am biologically, so I don't lie about it if it comes up.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people have had bad experiences with male players of a game. They want a safe place away from male players. How is *that* a problem? They aren't saying all men are assholes, they just want a place with only women. It makes them feel safe and allows them to fully enjoy the game. What sort of gender roles are being enforced there?

Suppose a group decided to only allow membership to black people. How would they define "black"? There was a time when even Asians were grouped the same as modern blacks under the generic "colored"--should they be allowed in? On the other hand, we now know enough about genetics to argue that the Xhosa (typically referred to as "black") may be genetically closer to the Dutch (typically "white") than to other supposed "black" tribes--does this mean they should be excluded? The more you argue about it, the more clear it becomes that "black" and "white" don't actually mean anything.

I think the same is true when you try to divide people into "male" and "female." As it stands now, we've gone a step further by adding "agender," "bigender," etc., but "agender" still means at least two very different things, and "bigender" is becoming more and more questionable. I think even "male" and "female" encompass so many different ways of being and doing to be meaningless.

In other words, if you say that men can't join and women can, you're promoting the idea that the world is divided into men and women, and I don't think it is.

You're missing the point, this isn't about race. Women-only groups aren't segregation forced onto them by the majority. They're made by women gamers who have been sexually/verbally harassed by men in the majority of their time playing games. When the majority of players in any given game are male, chances are very high that you will find yourself with an asshole. These groups aren't created to exclude men because women think they suck, they're a safe haven for women.

For fuck's sake, this post ^ is an example of why comparing oppressions is dodgy. What kind of ridiculous comparison is this?

There's debates about whether "women's" spaces should be actually "non-cis-male" spaces these days, and it's not to be binary, it's to provide a temporary place of strength/chilling out for people who've been marginalised by the practices of cis men, aka the majority of men. "Women's spaces" are only there because sexism & the whole kyriarchy exists, take it away and we would be a beautiful sea of incidental genders or non-genders.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
So who decides if I'm allowed to identify as something other than cis male? It doesn't seem to be my call.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were born male and feel you are a man and nothing else but a man, then you're a cis male. it's that simple

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I myself have often yearned for a place with only women.

If you ID as female, I'm pretty sure the ladies-only WoW guilds I've been a member of would admit you. For what that's worth.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
uh what now

my biological sex might be x but that doesn't make me x. if someone asks if I am and I say 'no I'm y,' that's not lying.

Hm. I stand corrected.

I could probably fake my way into a females-only group
Jesus fucking Christ...

But the concept of separating men from women revolves... ETC
Ok, you're a moron. Fuck off.

I'm beginning to think you being called stupid has nothing to do with your skill at the game and everything to do with you being stupid.

I listen to what I'm told, and I try to learn from it. I reserve the right to argue, but I try to be polite and to avoid logical fallacies. If you think I'm stupid, then please, educate me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
this is very simple.

women-only groups don't exist because 'all men are jerks' or 'women can't be assholes.'

they exist because there's a very specific kind of sexism that goes on in gaming communities, where you can barely get on a mic without being harassed all the way to hell and back. http://fatuglyorslutty.com/ is a fun example, though it hasn't updated in a while.

these aren't isolated incidents. They happen near constantly. In my case I don't even need to get on the mic, since my usual online handles are distinctly feminine. i receive rape threats from random people on the internet on a weekly basis just for being a woman who plays video games and admits openly to being a woman.

why the fuck wouldn't women want to band together in their own little in a community like that? all men aren't sexists, the harassment comes from a very vocal minority, but that still doesn't make it okay. female players can still harass other players, but i doubt they're going to be saying 'get back in the kitchen cunt.'

Seriously. It's the same concept as a woman's only gym. At first you (I certainly did) might look at it and say "Hey, that's ridiculous."

And then you look at it deeper and realize, no, no it's not. It goes without saying that not all male gym-goers, and not all male gamers, are entitled assholes who are going to abuse/harrass you, but there's enough out there that women's only spaces need to exist (for now. And probably for a few more generations. Hopefully, there will be a time when they don't need to exist."

You COULD try to have a "No sexist douchebas" space, but do you know how you're going to enforce that? By having sexist douchebags join, and then needing to ban them, and why would you even take the chance when just one sexist douchebag can pretty much ruin someone's entire day (or life, depending).

"separating men from women"

Riiiiiiight. So, autonomous organising and safe spaces mean nothing to you, huh? Most non-cis people get it but you obviously don't. If you're for real, that is.

they referred to saying you are a woman if you have a penis as 'lying' so I'm going with troll

In an ideal world, yeah, we shouldn't have to separated under the assumption that people of one gender behave one way and viceversa, but in practice there's all this context that muddies the waters.

Women have been forced to make safe-spaces for themselves in gaming. It shouldn't be so.

Forcing everyone to mix and play together and pretend everything is fine and dandy isn't the solution; educating the masses to combat ignorance, foster empathy and understanding? That's what's gonna work.
