How close, exactly, is the plot and what is it? For example, if you were ripping off The Lord of the Rings and you had a plot of "A group of medieval fantasy dudes travel to destroy a ring of power in a volcano," I would side eye you. Probably. If you wrote, "A bunch of people go on adventure to destroy and evil relic," I wouldn't think much of it. There are tons of books like that all over.

This is of course me assuming when you say it wasn't the same words you're saying she wrote it all herself and didn't just word swap with a thesaurus here and there.

Here's there thing, a lot of people have written a lot of reasons for the similarities above me. Plagiarism is bad, yes, but you need to make sure first that that is what it is. I saw people accusing Guillermo del Toro for plagiarizing most of Pacific Rim because it had giant robots and there are previous works that exist in the world with giant robots. Seriously. I saw this. I nearly shit myself laughing.

Accusing someone of plagiarism is a serious thing. Maybe you should get someone else to read both stories and see what they think. Maybe multiple someones.

If you all agree it's totally plagiarism then don't condemn her in front of all of fandom and banish her. Simply ask her about it. Just ask. See where it heads from there. Because here's the big, big thing. She's not making money off of it. If it is plagiarism that is bad and I will never stand behind someone who does so knowingly but beyond letting her know she's done wrong and... I'm not sure what fandom repercussions are supposed to take place for this sort of thing but whatever those are, just let them happen. Don't go further than necessary, I guess.

Whatever happens, good luck.

Edit: If it is indeed plagiarism, isn't there a report plagiarism community on LJ still active?

Good advice.

I've used ideas from books/movies/etc before. One time I was going to write a story and someone said, "that sounds exactly like the movie Just Like Heaven." I had never seen it but I had ideas in my story down to exorcism that fit the movie. ;)

Other times though I've used ideas from movies and books intentionally but I wasn't ripping them off and switching words around; I definitely used my own words--I just borrowed a plot. I always credit though.

Yeah, the writing world is full of repurposed and reused ideas. It's essentially about how much of it did you turn into your own thing that really defines what is and isn't plagiarism.

the issue with pacific rim is a lot more than just 'omg giant robots' though. legendary pictures was in talks back in the day with gainax to create a live action evangelion movie. it rotted in development hell after being shopped around to several effects firms from stan winston to weta. fast forward to ledendary pictures and legacy effects (stan winston's team restructured after his death) coming out with this oh-so original~ concept

Except Guillermo del Toro has never seen Evengelion.

Edit: Also, never said it was original but in all honesty Pacific Rim is a bunch of current and popular things that were put all into one movie. Living after a post apocolyptic event? Check. Fighting aliens? Check. Giant robots? Check. It's not original but I'm betting it has a lot in common with more that just Evengelion beacuse these are popular conecepts that may not always be used together in this exact way but are constantly being used in all media. That's not plagiarism.

so? he doesn't have to have seen it for the people writing and creating the effects to have borrowed the concepts they'd already been developing long before they picked up the spec script (from a writer who'd be contracted for a very different product and then told - 'hey write a spec about giant robots no reason just can you?')
