Just a suggestion to the OP, you might like to look into wearing a menstrual cup. You can wear it just before the time your period is due and if it comes on later than you expect, no waste and no harm done. The cups are reusable and comfortable, plus they generally hold much more flow than tampons do. (LiveJournal has a comm that helped me out a lot when I was new to cups :-)

they hurt as fuck when you insert. :( i can't even get a tampon in without pain, much more... this.

Doesn't for everyone, indeed not for most. Depends on the person, might be worth OP trying (unless you are OP)
