People are going to have to realize that there are mix people who don't fit any stereotype of what their ethnic make-up is. But just because they don't look like the stereotype, doesn't mean it erases their ethnic make-up.

For example;

This is Darren Criss;

He's Filipino-Chinese on his mother's side.

Now if there was a movie about half Filipino character should he be able to play the part? Of course, he should. Because that is exactly what he is. However, you will have people nay saying it because to them he doesn't look, "Filipino enough" or is "too white." (After all he did play Harry Potter in A Very Potter Musical. Harry Potter is the whitest character outside of a Dickens novel.) That is, he doesn't fit the stereotype.

Is this wrong to think way? Yes. Because you are erasing his background. People who say this are pretty much stating, "Since you don't look like what I think the stereotype should look like, you can not be part that culture/ethnic group." They are, in effect, erasing his heritage. That right there, is racist.

And I speak as an Irish-Puerto Rican who didn't fit the stereotype of what a Puerto Rican should look like. All my life I got the, "You don't look Puerto Rican. So you can't be Puerto Rican because we said so" speech. Again, that's racist.

Thing is, there are more and more mix kids being born every day. This dinosaur way of thinking needs to stop because it is excluding more and more people from their cultural heritage all because of their looks.

this is a good post

*hugs you*

My son is Turkish/Japanese from his father's side, and whatever mutt melting pot I am (most caucasian with a small smattering of Native American), and people are always making comments on his physical attributes based on what ethnicity they think he is.

For example, he has very pale white skin with a few smattering freckles (not a lot as he tans really easily if he pretends not to be a allergic to sunlight), with a very distinctive asian eye shape, and he's 6'8" 1/2 tall. His looks don't really fit anything (unless it's a large, dark vampire look).

My husband gets that speech a lot. He's blue-eyed, has light brown hair, and shares a last name with one of those Middle East dictators you see pilloried on the evening news. He passes for white except in airports. It's amazing, but at least he got some troll mileage out of his stealth Arabness back when we lived in the South.

I did not know that Darren is part Chinese. I knew he was half Pinoy, and very proud of it (I mean, the guy wears a shirt that says "Hapa" on it on the regular).

Huh. The more you know.

Thank you! If I hear the phrase "white passing" one more time I'm going to vomit, and you have explained why it pisses me off in a way I never have been able to.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. It's not for the invisible internet army to judge whether someone "looks white" or not.

It seems that people have decided that because Keanu is a) successful and b) doesn't talk about his ethnicity a lot it can't have been an issue for him, when in fact we have no idea.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
You're absolutely right, looking a certain way it doesn't erase one's ethnicity in the least. But Hollywood is racist to its bones and casting white-passing non-white actors is the next best thing to just casting white actors in brown makeup; any excuse to avoid making the "stereotype" the hero of the story. This isn't the fault of the actors and they should never be attacked with "you're not brown enough", but it's another form of erasure that's just as problematic.

This. One of my oldest friends is 1/4 Cherokee, but she also happens to be blond and blue-eyed so of course she gets people accusing her of lying about it all the time despite the fact that she's actively involved with her local tribal council.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I could name one example too: the person I'm thinking of is half-North African Arab, half white. You could say she's "white passing", much as I hate that term. (And much as it would erase her identity and background.)

Now, the person I just described is married to a North African. So their daughter is 3/4 North African by ancestry, right?

The kicker? Said daughter is blonde.

wait a minute

aren't you the person who was all up in arms about ricardo montleban not being allowed to identify as latino because you have the same skin tone
