Amen. I'm so sick of this. Could they have cast a more obviously Asian or mixed actor? Of course. But Keanu Reeves is not white, he isn't even white-passing. People need to stop calling him that.

I think I suck at Hollywood and anything race-related thereof. I don't give a shit what anybody looks like, at best it's a secondary concern for me; I just want good actors and a good plot.

With that being said I adore Keanu Reeves and was unaware of this controversy. I think people just bitch to bitch; they're never happy. Somebody is always going to find a reason to bitch about because things aren't exactly the way they want them.

I wish that people would be able to critcise the whitewashing in this movie and Hollywood WITHOUT erasing Keanu's racial identity, saying things like "it doesn't matter that he's not white because he looks white".

Apart from it being a subjective judgement (I know people who've said he looks 'obviously' mixed), incorrect (I'm gay but apparently 'look' straight, and that doesn't make me immune to homophobia), it invalidates and erases his own experiences with racism even in Hollywood (getting turned down for auditions because he was too 'exotic', telling him they wanted someone more 'conventional', people making fun of his 'squinty' eyes, etc.)

I'm Chinese and there are things that upset me about this movie, race-wise, but erasing Keanu's identity (or that of the half-white character he's playing, and who existed prior to Keanu's involvement) is not the way to go about it.

People are going to have to realize that there are mix people who don't fit any stereotype of what their ethnic make-up is. But just because they don't look like the stereotype, doesn't mean it erases their ethnic make-up.

He's Filipino-Chinese on his mother's side.

Now if there was a movie about half Filipino character should he be able to play the part? Of course, he should. Because that is exactly what he is. However, you will have people nay saying it because to them he doesn't look, "Filipino enough" or is "too white." (After all he did play Harry Potter in A Very Potter Musical. Harry Potter is the whitest character outside of a Dickens novel.) That is, he doesn't fit the stereotype.

Is this wrong to think way? Yes. Because you are erasing his background. People who say this are pretty much stating, "Since you don't look like what I think the stereotype should look like, you can not be part that culture/ethnic group." They are, in effect, erasing his heritage. That right there, is racist.

And I speak as an Irish-Puerto Rican who didn't fit the stereotype of what a Puerto Rican should look like. All my life I got the, "You don't look Puerto Rican. So you can't be Puerto Rican because we said so" speech. Again, that's racist.

Thing is, there are more and more mix kids being born every day. This dinosaur way of thinking needs to stop because it is excluding more and more people from their cultural heritage all because of their looks.

If I'd had to guess, I would've said he was a white guy who could pass somewhat believably for Asian rather than the other way around. Never gave it that much thought, though. I'm generally more interested in whether an actor plays their character well than anything else.

Maybe it's just because I personally know a lot of hapas (and am an Asian halfie myself), but I could definitely tell Keanu had some mix in him just by his looks. I remember looking it up years ago to confirm it with myself, and I have friends with similar heritage who look even more Caucasian than Keanu. And yeah, I wish race discussion could be more nuanced as well, throwing people should stop throwing around "white-passing" like that's the end-all judgment on the matter. As if you could never experience discrimination just because you are "white-passing".

People saying "it doesn't matter that he's not white because he passes for white" makes me want to rage punch the people saying it, right in the babymaker. That's erasing a huge part of his identity based on WHAT he looks like rather than what he actually is. Ugh.

I'm half Asian and half white and I look more white than Asian. But being Asian is very important to me because it's a link to my mother, and that entire side of my identity, and for someone to tell me that doesn't matter (which is what I get from those morons saying that about Keanu) because of the tint of my skin and (non)tilt of my eyes? FUCK THEM.

Keanu is part of that mixed club so if he wants to play a character that figures prominently in a part of his heritage he should be able to do it without fucking morons debating the merits of his choices based on THEIR perceptions. FUCKING FUCKITY FUCK.

But I really agree with you. Looking at the movie (well, the wikipedia page) it's very easy to criticise the issue without resorting to denying someone their heritage because of their looks. I mean just from the picture my mind immediately went to The Last Samurai and that's not a nice association in that context.

We *should* be criticising it because it appears to be an attempt at 300 IN EDO JAPAN, and we'll have to endure two solid hours of pontificating about honour so we can watch sweet light-up katana fights.

Keanu Reeves has a pale enough skintone to pass as "white" to me. In fact, I was a bit surprised when I found out he had a bit of Chinese somewhere in his ancestry, and then looked at the rest of his racial background... and he's so mixed that whatever Chinese he has is well-buried under all the various Caucasian types he's also got.

But while he never struck me as "obviously mixed", nither would I wish to deny him any of his varied background either.

I just think people get too attached to the idea that "White" = Caucasian. Caucasian people come in a huge variety of tones, not just Nordic-pale white.

I know what it's like to "assume" people are white when you come from a white country. I used to do it all the time, people were just white by default unless they were very obviously not. But after living in Asia for years, my perception has changed a bit. But even for Keanu, I always knew he was mixeed? Keanu blatantly has non-white eyes - the eye shape is totally Asian or -possibly- Native American. Not to mention the dark hair and eye color.

At any rate, as I understand from this movie, the character he's playing is mixed. He's not playing a 100% Japanese character. And, I've heard, the Japanese roles will be played by Japanese actors. So how is this a problem, unless we really want to be picky and say "well, Keanu isn't part Japanese, it's Chinese!" or something, which is legitimate, but I can to some extent understand Hollywood wanting to cast a big name American actor to sell this thing, and (probably through Hollywood's own fault) there just aren't a lot of mixed Asian actors.

I've loved him for ten years now. The thought or '(un-)importance' of his race has never even crossed my mind. He's a person. Isn't that enough of a validation? Same goes for all the people in the world.
